St David’s Win Jr Eastern Counties 1st Round
[Written by Patrick Bean]
St David’s enjoyed great success during the first round of the Junior Eastern Counties Cup title with a 66-run — via run rate — victory over Cleveland County at Sea Breeze Oval last Saturday [July 6].
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat by the young Islanders St David’s found themselves in early trouble at 27 for two, with opening batters Enrique Minks and Zaki Minors dismissed for eight and two runs respectively, quickly recovered.
A third wicket stand of 56 between Sa-Qui Robinson [53] and Duvontae Binns [12] enabled them to recover from the early mini-collapse, before Binns fell making the score 83 for three.
The stage was set for Isaiah O’Brien [92 not out] to show his prowess with the bat. The No 5 hammered Cleveland’s attack for seven sixes and as many fours in leading his team to 196 for seven from their allotted 40 overs.
Amair David and Mcaiz Trott each took two wickets for Cleveland, with the former’s costing 15 runs and the latter’s 41.
Cleveland’s chase began with some promise, as they grafted their way to 52 for 2, with Gregory Talbot Jr [14], Daeshun Smith [21] and Gregory Talbot II [13] getting among the runs.
Wickets began to tumble with some regularity after the top order’s removal, with only Trott [12] and Jomarian Dill [15 not out] able to manage double figures.
In the end, it was rain that decided the outcome, ending the affair with 32.3 overs played in the Cleveland innings the youngsters from Harris Bay were stagnant at 93 for 8.
Isaac Todd led the attack for St David’s, returning figures of three for four, while Minors took two for 12.
The rain stoppage meant that St David’s won by 66 runs via run rate par score.
