St. George’s To Host Cup Match Extravaganza
The Corporation of St. George’s will host a Cup Match Extravaganza on Friday, July 19th, starting at 6:30 PM.
A spokesperson said, “The Corporation of St. George’s announces a celebration event on Town Square and advises residents and businesses about the setup. The Corporation of St. George’s keeps tradition alive in the UNESCO World Heritage Site town.”
Town Mayor Quinell Francis states, “We are in the process of preparing for the lead-up to Bermuda’s biggest national holiday, the celebration of Emancipation Day on August 1 and Mary Prince Day on August 2, which the community collectively calls Cup Match, where a cricket match between two rival clubs from the east and west of Bermuda takes place.”
Mayor Francis added, “Restating the reason for the holiday is important, as the younger generation associates it with the cricket match, camping, and four days of activity. However, the purpose of the celebration is fundamental because, without the change in law in 1834, a large majority of the Bermudian population would not have been allowed to do any of this. As a historic town, our community’s role is to acknowledge our past and celebrate the milestones that connect us as a community, hence the lead-up celebration to the Cup Match holiday weekend.”
The spokesperson said, “The team at the Corporation will host this year’s Cup Match Extravaganza on Friday, July 19th, starting at 6:30 PM. The event is hosted in advance of Cup Match because the clubs move into high gear with County games, Trial matches, and the Cup Match team selection, then into the big game.”
Town Manager Candy-Lee Foggo advises, “This year, the Corporation of St. George’s has partnered with the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce to bring the event to life. From now until July 19, we ask for patience from residents and businesses of the town as we prepare for the event. Temporary road closures may be necessary as we set up for the event.”
The spokesperson said, “On the day of the event, we strongly advise the public to park at Tiger Bay as a first point of reference to avoid having to loop back, as street parking fills up quickly.
“The Corporation of St. George’s welcomes the collaboration with the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce of this year’s event. Cup Match is a celebration of a significant period in Bermuda’s past, one that continues to shape the island today. Since St. George’s played a central role in this history, we believe it’s important to hold events that bring the community together and honour those who contributed to Bermuda’s peaceful society.”
