Toby Smith Joins Mosaic As Americas CEO
Toby Smith joined Mosaic Insurance as Americas CEO, effective July 23.
A spokesperson said, “Based in New York, Smith is a top-ranking industry figure who will become a member of the specialty insurer’s leadership team, with specific responsibility for spearheading market engagement and profitable growth across the US, Canada, and the wider Americas region.”
“Toby is a longtime colleague with an exceptional track record that has seen him build the largest environmental business in the market,” said Mosaic’s Co-CEO Mitch Blaser. “He will be instrumental in continuing our growth trajectory and accelerating our strategic ambitions across specialty product lines globally and in the critical US region. As he joins our impressive team, we look forward to creating significant value for our stakeholders, partners, and customers.”
“Our unique underwriting agency structure and syndicated products are delivering an impact across global markets, and the appointment of a high-caliber leader like Toby demonstrates our commitment to driving further profitable expansion through the Americas,” said Co-CEO Mark Wheeler. “As we gather momentum, he is the right person at the right time to scale up our business and help us seize the great opportunities ahead, and we look forward to working with him again.”
The spokesperson said, “Smith has more than 20 years’ experience in the specialty insurance industry, most recently as chief underwriting officer, North America specialty lines, for Liberty Mutual. He previously worked with Mosaic’s leadership at Ironshore Inc from 2009, launching its environmental business, and holding various roles, including president of environmental and president of E&S casualty.
“He began his career at AIG, where, prior to moving to underwriting, he managed a team in its environmental claims and coverage unit. Smith holds a bachelor of arts from Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, and a JD from Washington & Lee School of Law, Lexington, VA.
“At Mosaic, Smith will direct new product development and oversee Americas-focused lines of business, including the company’s three largest divisions—transactional liability, cyber, and environmental liability.”
“I’m thrilled to join Mosaic at this stage of its tremendous growth, and I look forward to working with its dynamic team—including Mitch, Mark, and other former colleagues—to deliver expansion, innovation, and success,” said Smith. “Mosaic is a young company that in a short time span has won recognition and market respect for its differentiated model, leading underwriters, and highly specialized business lines. The opportunity to join that journey and help shape its roadmap for the future is energizing.”
The spokesperson said, “Mosaic signaled its growing appetite for American business earlier this year when it moved its New York City office to a landmark building at One Grand Central Place, 60 East 42nd Street. The company launched in February 2021 and today has close to 180 employees across seven countries, with three of its offices—New York, Chicago, and Toronto—in North America.
“Mosaic underwrites across seven product lines selected for high technical barriers to entry and relevance to current and projected geopolitical and economic conditions: as well as cyber, and transactional and environmental liability, its focus lines include: political risk, political violence, financial institutions, and professional liability. The company’s model combines capacity from its Lloyd’s syndicate, 1609, with capital from carrier partners seeking regional access and deep expertise in non-commoditized lines.”
