36 Arrests Made During Cup Match Weekend

August 5, 2024 | 3 Comments

“The policing plan implemented over the just concluded Cup Match holiday weekend, was in the main, successful in preventing any major criminal activity,” the police said, adding that there “were thirty-six arrests for various offences, the majority being for outstanding warrants.”

A police spokesperson said, “However of particular concern, among them were ten persons arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drug and three persons arrested for possession of bladed articles, namely, knives. There were also a number of domestic violence reports which were quickly acted upon by officers and which have now become ongoing investigations in some instances.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Antoine Daniels, while not going into detail, addressed the domestic abuse idents.

“In recent times, there has been a noticeable uptick in such reports. It’s too early to say whether there has been an increase in these incidents or, whether victims are now feeling more empowered to come forward and speak out against this less than desirable behaviour.”

“Either way, your Bermuda Police Service has adopted a zero tolerance approach for these acts and assure those individuals who rightly choose not to suffer in silence that we will do what is required to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Mr. Daniels also spoke about matters involving bladed articles, stating, “Our ongoing high visibility patrols and heightened enforcement efforts have resulted in the seizure of several knives and other bladed items. Often, upon questioning those found in possession of these items claim to be carrying them for protection. However, it has been proven that carrying a knife or other bladed item, significantly increases the risk of becoming involved in a dangerous situation, rather than preventing you from becoming a victim. Our advice is always that should you feel threatened, walk away from possible confrontation.”

Mr. Daniels acknowledged there “were a number of skirmishes after the cricket had ended on Friday,” saying, “These were quickly dealt with by police assisted by the security staff on hand as well as by members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment. There was one incident which was recorded and the video circulated on social media. That matter remains under investigation and we urge anyone with information to please call 211, or, the main police number, 295-0011.”

Mr. Daniels ended, “I wish to thank our officers for their continued commitment to making Bermuda safer as they worked through the holiday period to ensure there were no major incidents occurring. This would not have been possible without the assistance of the Reserve Police and the Royal Bermuda Regiment and of course you, the public. Thank you for your continued support.”

What exactly is the rule on knives? Is a multitool considered a knife? What’s the admissible blade length? Does it matter how it’s carried (will the cutter in my toolbox land me in trouble)?

    • Joe Bloggs says:

No fixed blade in public longer than 3″ without lawful excuse.

And saying “I’m looking for work as a gardener” is unlikely to work as a lawful excuse for wandering around with a machete in your hand.

Of course, if you are actually trimming a hedge with your machete you should have a lawful excuse.
