Allied World Concludes Internship Program

Allied World Bermuda held a nine-week summer internship program from June 10th to August 9th with three talented Bermudian students selected out of a competitive field of candidates. The interns included Sari Smith [Bermuda College and the University of Exeter], Joshua Thorne [University of South Florida and University of Tampa], and Hannah Deacon [University of Nottingham].

A spokesperson said, “Allied World’s internship program combines practical learning, project work, individual mentoring, and training. The students rotate through different departments, including Property, General Casualty, Professional Lines, Operations, Actuary, Claims, and Reinsurance. The program focuses on providing the students with a solid foundation for a future career in insurance. The interns interact and train with leaders throughout Allied World and build broker relationships with a broker swap program. In addition, we host various in-house sessions including presentations and projects from various departments.”

Colm Singleton, EVP, Head of Bermuda and Global Markets Claims Group, said, “Allied World believes in mentoring the next generation of local insurance professionals. The group of students expanded their knowledge and skills over the course of the summer, where they assisted and presented innovative ideas to department heads and leads. They had the opportunity to rotate through our departments, participate in a broker swap and attend industry events with various top field underwriting experts.”

Joshua Thorne, Allied World Bermuda Intern, said, “Allied World’s internship has been an incredible experience. The opportunity to gain exposure in the numerous departments in which the company operates has given me a more comprehensive understanding of the insurance industry and given me a better idea of what direction I would like to follow for my future career.”
