5,600 out of power at 6pm when the wind hasn’t blown that hard. Total disgrace and Belco wants to increase prices. Where is Roban and the RA because this is totally unacceptable. Where is Burt? Talk about third world.

    • AceBoy says:

Totally agree! With the mount of money we give them, they should be forced to have all underground water proof power lines.

    • Hey says:

Belco turn people off purposely while they work in other areas. One year my power went off at 9am, the storm had well passed and I had power the whole night. I was without power the whole day, at around 8pm I called Belco because I knew I was going to go the whole night without power, I was furious, I told the girl on the line to get a truck up here now and turn me on. 40 minutes later the Belco truck was coming up my hill.

      • Tmj says:

Hush! You’re just talking out the side of your mouth and making up stories! You’re ungrateful too!

    • Talibah Santally says:

There should be a competitor for belco. Instead of them being the only ones to provide power for the island. Sin e they are the only one providing power they just raise the price when ever

      • Hey says:

        Bad management, bad company.

      • Joe Bloggs says:

“There should be a competitor for belco.”

        Feel free to start one.

        • Toodle-oo says:

Let’s all chip in for a whole new generation station and distribution system . Sounds like a winner and belco will finally get that competition some people think they need , eh ?

    • Tmj says:

Stop complaining and be grateful you have life and it wasn’t worse that what it was! You people are just chronic complainers and very ungrateful!

  2. Lion Paw says:

Best to preserve your device by not using the battery unnecessarily then.
Possibly pose the question to them in another form once the storm is over

  3. Snowballs says:

Alright Belco hit the road running…may the force be with you!

  4. Anonymous says:

Looks like the damage is not too bad and the storm has weakened, praise God.

    • Tmj says:

Agreed! It could have been worse. Instead of these people complaining and degrading Belco, why don’t they just be grateful that their lives or anyone they know weren’t lost. Some Bermudians find any and everything to complain about!!! SMH

  5. Mark says:

They have been assessing for over 5 hours now. Just get it fixed already! I hate belco

  6. Question says:

Is the airport open? Are flights coming in and leaving? Is the causeway open? Has Belco resumed restoration activities this morning?

  7. Question says:

These updates have been very helpful. Thank you.

  8. PAC MAN says:

    The people of BELCo.

    CONGRADULATIONS !

The people of BELCo you are with out doubt our heroes .
We are all very proud of you.
The task that you all undertook was loaded with danger and more than most people can ever imagine.
You all did an absolutely fantastic job under extreme circumstance for us.
From me and my family and many other families as well, a very big THANK YOU and we will say that is hardly enough ,at the very least, we all mean it with gratitude.
How can we know what you all went through it must have horrible,.
We know that you put you lives on the line for us .
17,000 VOLTS and more ,that is enough power to move heaven and earth that is no joke, as we were not out there but we were there with you in our hearts.
Without doubt what you did, that take allot of courage an fortitude to do a job well done .

You all did what many of us could not do

    • LOL - the real one says:

“17,000 VOLTS and more ,that is enough power”

      No, it’s 17KV.
      Power is measured in Watts.

      Are you an MP?

      • Joe Bloggs says:

        “Power is measured in Watts”

Electrical energy is usually measured in volt-amperes, or “VA”. Using VA avoids the argument about energy or potential energy. One volt-amp equals one watt, ignoring the argument about energy or potential energy.

Amperes or “amps” measure the volume of electrons flowing while volts measure the pressure causing amperes to flow.

And the “K” in “KV” refers to a unit of 1,000, whilst the “V” in “KV” refers to volts. So 17,000 volts is the same as 17KV.

        • PAC MAN says:

You can always baffle people with science.

Did you coppy all tha from some book some where

You never said any thing about step down transformers.

Is is alway good to keep things simple even if you have to scare people with big numbers .

          • Joe Bloggs says:

“17,000 volts is the same as 17KV”

That is not science, it is high school mathematics.

The bit about watts versus volt-amps in order to avoid arguments about potential energy is university level physics, but I expect you can find the same information on the internet somewhere.

I never mentioned anything about transformers at all. I did not mention the effect of inrush current in a transformer. I did not mention the difference between a delta transformer configuration and a star configuration. And I did not mention anything step-up or step-down transformers.

I was simply seeking to address factual errors, not provide an exposition on electrical theory.

            • Truth says:

You’re clearly not an engineer, you googled, or used ChatGPT to attempt to look intelligent.

        • LOL - the real one says:

You’re attempting to talk about real and apparent power…due to inductive and capacitive reactance, but you didn’t understand what you had googled.

        • LOL - the real one says:

I don’t think you understand the relationship between Power, potential difference and current.
You should probably sit this one out.

          • Joe Bloggs says:

The word “power” is imprecise. I prefer the word “energy”.

            • LOL - the real one says:

That’s because you don’t understand the difference. Your google foo is lacking.

              • Joe Bloggs says:

So says the person who did not understand that 17KV and 17,000 volts are the same thing.

                • Hilarious says:

                  You go, Joe!

                • LOL - the real one says:

LOL…can you show me where I said that?

You’re the one who doesn’t understand the difference between Potential difference, measured in Volts, and power, measured in Watts.

You made it up, because you don’t understand electricity, and neither do your fans. LMFAO

        • LOL - the real one says:

Here you go, Joe…since your reading comprehension is so poor, I’ll explain it to you.

PAC MAN says: “17,000 VOLTS and more ,that is enough power to move heaven and earth that is no joke”

          I said: “No, it’s 17KV.
          Power is measured in Watts.”

That means, that I understand that 17,000 Volts = 17 KV…and that I also understand that Volts are not Watts…that’s where you’ve confused yourself, and then subsequently embarrassed yourself.

      • PAC MAN says:

        Mr LOL- the real one
        Greetings old man !

        All rise !

No ! ~ I am not an M.P. because they don’t pay enough and I am not very keen on flying the jet.

        • Joe Bloggs says:

          “All rise !”

Do I have to rise? I live east of White Hill and my opinion doesn’t matter.

  9. Steve says:

BELCO means. Bloody Ego Lunatics Causing Outrage

  10. Joe Bloggs says:

Thankfully, we did not experience as much damage as we could have.

    • Toodle-oo says:

Not to worry , plenty more storms on their way . Will we continue to be as lucky ?

  11. Jake steak says:

Cedar Hill still without power it’s now 4pm on Sunday. We lost power pretty earlier on Friday afternoon too. Belco can you help

    • Toodle-oo says:

I feel for you guys and now that a number of pole fires have been reported this could delay folks like you getting back on line quickly .
Loosing power is probably the biggest worry in a hurricane as our houses are so well built that significant damage is unlikely .
If you haven’t already , do what I did last year and pick up a small generator that’s enough to at least run your fridge and fire up your water pump. It takes out 80% of the stress of a storm and they’re not that costly . With the cost of food now it’ll pay for itself after saving 3 fridges/freezers of groceries !

  12. PAC MAN says:

    Doodle-oo. & Friends .

It is very rare to see a domestic water pump to day with a 1/4 HP motor , these days most home owners install on average of a 3/4 HP water pump good for many two unit homes.

Usually these water pump motors come internally wired for 120 volts AC .

While some water pump motors not all can be converted to 240 volts AC and specially home wired accordingly to the home supply as a” wall plug in unit ” dependan on how thehouse is set up which cane easily comected to the generators at least 240 volt + supply if so equipped .

You would be need in at lease a 2 KW generator with at lease 15 gallons of gas with battery start to be used as a separate power supply.
I considder that as a big and heavy home supply generator and where are you going to store it ? .

You are better of filling the bath tub. using a bucker for flushing or buy a camping toilet

Those 2 KW generators can burn up to a gallon of gas pet hour .

Some houses have internal wiring faults which can cause fires so personally i have never been in favour of hooking up a generator directly to the house for safety reasons.

keep it simple and run heavy separate extension cable to power bars for lighting.

Todays many refrigerators are forces cold air and require100% power supply.
    Just buy less cold food.

Running a generator during a hurricane is not a good idea and is not recomended.

Think twice before you buy any generator as not all hurricane are direct hits remember you have to run a generator at lease every month to keep it in running order , also during a hurricane , you has gas storage to think of .

During hurricane Emily I ran exrension cables to 9 house for Lighting only from my little ONE KW generator.

Warning : If you are not sure what you are doing dont !

    • Toodle-oo says:

FYI my little 2000 inverter gen easily runs my pump . Step up to a 3/4 hp and it won’t but so what ? In that situation the householder who needs it buys a slightly larger gen . It also easily runs the fridge too . With the frequency of storms now coupled with the obvious fragility of our power grid people should really be looking at getting a generator . Why on earth fill up a bath tub of water , which makes bathing redundant while the power is out, when a little generator that will keep the water system pressurized will seem like a godsend ?

      • Joe Bloggs says:

“people should really be looking at getting a generator”

        So much for going green.

    • LOL - the real one says:

      1 HP is 735 Watts…you don’t need a 2KW generator for a 3/4HP pump.

      • Joe Bloggs says:

        “1 HP is 735 Watts”

That would be a metric horsepower. An imperial horsepower is about 745 watts.

Depending on the motor on the pump, the start-up current could be up to twice the running current, so a 2KW generator should happily start a 3/4 HP motor. A 1.5 KW generator might not.

        • LOL - the real one says:

That doesn’t matter. At least you’re trying though . LOL

  13. Mark says:

massive tree sitting on top of wires on S Hill in paget – 3 days to remove that? really? seems pretty dangerous to just let that keep sitting there with the poles bent over and all

  14. PAC MAN says:

    Toodle -oo
    Kind sir !

Please will you define “a little generator” .

By the way the little ants are on the march.

It is not alway advisable for every one to to own a little generator as in some instances it is not practical like living in a condo or West Gate now that is heaven on earth , not unless the roof blows off.

I usually run heavy extension to my neighbors houses so i can run the generator after 10. PM.

I did not run my 40 year old one K generator this time as it is not good to mess with generators in the rain .
This hurricane got me two wheel barrows full of rain water.

Plan “B” you always need a plan “B”. you can argue with that as back up.

Use other container like 16 x 5 gallon buckets for flushing water, now tell me how are you going to fill the tub because i said so !

Alway treat generators as a “maybe ” it will and may be it will not

Everbody has a choice in this world during the on set of a hurricane , it is either they take a bath, some don’t , or flush the toilet, it is good the take a bath after preparing the house then fill the tub with hot water before the wind gets up .

I wonder how many home generators failed this time round and did the complain to BELCo.
    GOT YA !
by those who did not think of filling the tub which is a great idea and you can alway get in the tub with hot water if you have need too.

I have had alot of experiance all nighters with generators and Ham radio says :VP9JR

This is all about survival !

I will not talk about bathing babies this time round .

or pre packaging food up before the hurricane hits .

  15. PAC MAN says:

    BERMUDA ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HURRICANS
The book has to be better that a farmers almanac but also inclusive of .
with no empty spaces. it will take time to get it perfect .
We here in Bermuda have been through more Hurricans that many can remember
terry tuck has some thing to say about hurricanes

Many ship went to the Bottom pirating was a big in shipping years ago
Many pictures will make the book interesting to look at for children .
Our light house has a story to tell when it was it and why .
I think that it is a about time a a very comprehensive bound book be written in several languages to. deal with ever aspect and survival through a hurricane an other weather patterns. including our gulf stream
the book Should deal with eyer aspect of weather tornadoes ,cyclones, storms, rain and wind to name a few,
contributors should be invites to participate .
the Royal Gazette and Bernews and parents shold be invited to participate the book should be factual and not full of bed time stories.
With out doubt the absolute number one on page one should deal with water and water management you do not get through a hurricane with out clean fresh water and pleanty of it and after the hurrican has past why we should be boiling water.
Doctors should be invites and our hospital should be included.

Hor many during this last hurrican have been very frusrtrated as tempers were running things

The book should also deal with animals pets and children of all ages.
Royal Gazette has some very talented highly skilled persons working there .

food is an interesting topic wta do we eat during a hurricane ?
the DYER report was a very interesting publication woth exploring .

This also be non political non racial and not of a religiouse nature, facts people, facts ,dates, and times ,sort of a history book up to the present times.
