Ministry Provides Hurricane Ernesto Update
This morning [Aug. 17], the Ministry of National Security urged safety and responsible behaviour as the island continues to experience the effects of Hurricane Ernesto.
The Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks said, ”I wish to extend my best wishes to all of Bermuda and express my hope that all are faring well. We have been getting numerous of persons who are venturing out in this storm. We have gone through the eye of Hurricane Ernesto, and now the weather is deteriorating again. I am urging persons to stay inside. We will continue to experience prolonged, dangerous winds throughout the day and we want to ensure there are no serious emergency incidents.”
8.30am Update from BWS Director Michelle Pitcher
A Government spokesperson said, “The Minister noted that currently the EMO is receiving damage assessments as reports from overnight come into the Operations Group. The public will be updated as information becomes available.
“As it relates to BELCO the Minister noted that as of 8.20am, Hurricane Ernesto has caused approximately 75% of customers to lose power and has damaged some of BELCO’s overhead infrastructure.
“BELCO advised again:
- “Only call 955 in an emergency such as a pole fire.
- “Always assume a downed wire is live. Never approach a downed wire, try to move it or touch it.
- “As soon as the storm conditions have subsided, and it is safe to move about, BELCO crews will conduct damage assessments, report findings and begin the restoration process.
- “Persons should stay off of the roads to allow the restoration teams, inclusive of Works & Engineering, Parks, the Regiment, BELCO and other utilities to clear debris from the roads and get the island back up and running safely and quickly.
“As a reminder, during the storm, residents can tune in to the Emergency Broadcast Station at 100.1 FM for official information and updates. 100.1 FM is also available online via http://gov.bm and scrolling to the bottom of the page. The public can also follow official Government updates via all its social media platforms.
“The Minister will provide an update later this morning regarding any further storm related developments.”
