PLP & OBA Statements On AG, Changes & More
The PLP and OBA both released statements pertaining to the announcement of the Attorney General position, politics and more.
OBA’s Scott Pearman’s Statement
Scott Pearman — the Shadow Minister for Legal Affairs — said, “Will the last person to leave the Burt Administration please turn off the lights?
“There is a saying that all political careers end in failure. Eventually you are out, one way or another.
“One can’t help but feel that the outgoing Burt Administration has reached the end of its run.
“Only last month two cabinet ministers jumped ship – one taking the unprecedented step this week of leaving a government in disarray to cross the floor to the opposition OBA.
“The Cup Match departure of the Attorney-General [AG] triggered a vacancy in the AG role. Barely three weeks ago, Kim Wilson stepped in to fill the AG and Legal Affairs role. Yet today she announces that she too is stepping away from that Ministry.
“The Premier’s solution is to make yet another temporary appointment, with the Director of Public Prosecutions [DP] becoming a non-political AG. This has the look of a leader who has lost control over his future, forced to make reactive decisions as events keep on hitting him.
“Yet the Premier’s statement today reveals the appointment of the DPP, Ms. Cindy Clarke, is itself merely “ on a temporary basis”. This is stopgap politics. All David Burt is doing is buying time. Bermuda needs better leadership than this.
“It is increasingly clear that David Burt’s job is the temporary one.”
PLP Statement
A PLP spokesperson said, “On a day when the PLP Government announced that an Attorney-General from the private sector will join the Cabinet on September 16, the OBA comes up with another petty release to try to mislead and divide the island.
“The OBA would do well to focus on their brewing internal war in Constituency #9 between Vic Ball and Vance Campbell, rather than trying to deflect from their own internal squabbles.
“Today the PLP rolled out our candidate for Pembroke East, and tomorrow we will roll out our candidate for Sandys North.
“Our candidates stand ready to compare our record of increasing pensions for our seniors, introducing a minimum wage, and reducing payroll taxes for workers to their lowest level in history while ensuring that those who earn more pay their fair share; against the anti-Bermudian agenda of the OBA.”
LOL the OBA statement is the most juvenile piece of garbage. Who writes these things?
They are so obsessed with David Burt. Yet their leaders all have been flash in the pans. They wish they had the longevity of David Burt.
Totally disagree on this one. If anything, the statement from the PLP is avoidance of their biggest challenge and issue- internal division and lack of trust of the Premier’s Cabinet towards him and the Premier of them.
I think it is clear that Kim Wilson was never going to be the AG long term as she has been the substantive Min of Health. She was literally only there to fill the gap upon Ms Simmons retirement. The Premier explained that the new AG will take office Sep 16. Constitutionally there has to be someone filling the AG role, so Ms Clarke has been appointed interim. Sometimes things are simply as they are. I think you, and the OBA writer, are trying to mischief make, which is understandable. What you all need to do is figure out what you gonna do with Vance.
I find it disgusting that you are a piece of the PLP machinery and do not disclose who you are. Your posts are to manipulate.
The bigger question is, “Why would Kim Wilson, who was the first AG relinquish the role of AG ? Why did Kathy Lynne Simmons resign from this position? Why did the PS, Gina Hurst- Maybury resign from her position? Why wasn’t Wayne Caine who is a qualified attorney chosen for this position?
A COUNTRY IS DISARAY .
There must be thousands of people here who have become self disenfranchised or other wise not having a justifiable reason to even go to the poles to vote for many reasons as we ore offered hobsons choice.
That is no way to run a country!
The P.L.P. and the O.B.A. can not do it alone as they are not gods , they both need the backing of the people ,an let me tell you all that you do not have it, because that went out the window with the bath water .
I will also say that Bermuda is not alone as many other governments have their failures and disappointments.
Can it be for several reasons including Money that a politition does not want to loose his job or is it the job, is that so demanding with some of them are swinging the lead or is it marking time !
Sometimes I wonder that the job being as you knows is the people choice is nothing but popularity contest while the career position is financially set for life.
Do we have a stalemate on the hill where 36 of Bermuda’s finest have hit an unpenatrable brick wall either they jump over it or go round it, which may or will not work certainly we cannot go through it.
There are many intelligent people here also let me say those many briliant people out there could ask “what’s your problem? ”

As i see it, and who am, i can not walk on water , all i have is a vote left and that sadly means absolutely nothing .
Governments need money unfortunately more money leave this island than come in, soon there will be no more Bananas on the tree and no more fish in the sea as we live in hope that our politions will save their and our bacon.
I am broke on Monday Like the rest of you for ever being if they do not stop taking.
We can no longer finance your extravagant fantasies .
We , have sad news for all of you, and that is noting is going to happen any time soon, as the national debt and the enormouse private debt is crippeling this island, people also are borowing money to save their skins also .
These debts need to be re negotiated as times is not on your or my side.
I have read through many the un savourary public comments posted on Bernews that needs to make and take a drastic change complaining with our solution never solved any problems, actions and hard work does that to solve our major and un denighable debt problems, these are the weak links in our chain.
Several of the many are the lack racial harmony the other is a lack of a moderate flow of sustainable money and without doubt we need to butter our bread with TRUST or is it the lack of it that put us in this mess..
Next week does not have to be as bad as this one has been sad aint it !
I and many also ask this question tell us does money have wings does all go out to the money lenders also
when we could be the money lender.
May i ask, is there no solution to our problems or are we not looking for a way out on the mess did we put both feet in ?
Here is one idea which has worked before its called ” Government Price Control ” G.P.C. on every thing including taxes on top of taxes we with out doubt have to be very carefull how we cut our cloth.
