The PLP released a statement highlighting some of their youth programmes.

A spokesperson said, “The youth are the architects of tomorrow. We believe that two of our most important causes are protecting our vulnerable and making steady progress towards a better, fairer future for future generations.

“To us, that means:

  • Providing our children with an education that enables them to compete for jobs, opportunities, and leadership in our own country.
  • Protecting our children from those who would prey on or exploit them.
  • Giving our children a path away from gangs, violence, and anti-social behavior.

“To achieve those objectives, we have introduced several initiatives aimed at supporting their growth and success.

  1. Rolled back OBA cuts to scholarships, grants, training, and education, giving our youth with the will but without the means greater access to technical training, higher education, and skills training.
  2. Established the Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative via the BEDC to support our youth in developing the framework to do for self as business owners.
  3. Launched the first signature schools at CedarBridge Academy and The Berkeley Institute.
  4. Toughened our laws against grooming and sexually exploiting our children.
  5. Supported the Gang Reduction Task Force and the MIRRORS Programme to intervene in disputes among our youth and provide alternatives to gangs and other anti-social behavior.
  6. Youth Community Action Programme: Encouraging active community involvement, this program inspires young people to participate in social action projects that address local challenges and contribute to positive social change. It emphasizes the development of individual character through service to others.

“To further reinforce our vision for our youth and the future, we’ve also:

  • Provided more pathways and funding towards first-time home ownership.
  • Put more affordable housing units on the market, with more scheduled for construction over the coming years.
  • Put in place Bermuda’s first Minimum Wage, ensuring that our lowest-paid workers [traditionally our youth and seniors] receive a fair wage for a fair day’s work.

“This work is seeing results, but we know that making steady progress for our youth is a task that can never and must never end. That’s why we will soon be launching our National Youth Council, enabling the voices of our youth to have the opportunity to advise and inspire our Government while providing greater insight into the special needs and interests of our young Bermudians.

“We look forward to further talking together, working together, and doing all we can to make steady progress for our youth.”
