The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition will be held on August 31 at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition returns on Saturday, August 31, 2024. This is the big family event you have been waiting all summer for on Horseshoe Bay Beach. The organizers of the competition are excited to hold this event as a perfect highlight to the end of summer with some extra surprises.

“This year we are excited to welcome two overseas semi-professional sandcastle builders to our island.

“Welcoming back Pete Faverio, who has competed twice before in our competition. Pete comes to us from Delaware and started his sandcastle journey eight years ago and hasn’t looked back since. He says building sandcastles is his happy place and we are so happy he is back to share that joy with us. You can follow Pete’s sandcastles on Facebook or Instagram – @petethesandman.

“Our second visiting artist is making his debut in our competition; welcome Tony Cusicanqui from Long Island, New York. Tony has been making sandcastles on Tobay Beach since 2020 and is super excited to soon be building on our pink sand beaches in less than three weeks. You can find his sandcastles on Instagram – @longislandsandman.

“Both artists are able to participate thanks to sponsorship from the Hamilton Princess, who have generously provided rooms for their stay.

“While having overseas artists is exciting, the competition is also all about our awesome local talent. We have several repeat teams already signed up and are looking forward to welcoming more new entrants to the creative world of sandcastle art.

“Sign up and entry is free, so gather your friends and family and sign up today at sandcastle.bm for the chance to win some amazing prizes.

“Top prize, open to all entries, is ‘Best on the Beach’ for $1,000, sponsored by Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewelry.

“Contestants in the adult, family, and teenager categories will be competing for cash prizes of:

“Competitors must check in between 9:30am and noon on the day of the competition and building will commence at 10am. Each team will be assigned a building plot of 8 feet by 8 feet and will be supplied with a mound of sand to work with to give them a head start. All entrants will receive free beverages on the day thanks to a long standing partnership with John Barritt & Son.

“All sandcastle building tools must be downed by 4pm, at which time the judges will arrive on the beach to commence judging. The panel of judges includes Jamal Hart, our long time supporter of the sandcastle competition; Ms. Roydell Neverson will be our judge this year on behalf of Hamilton Princess; and Debbie Backeberg, a previous entrant who is representing Everen this year.

“The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition is a non profit event and relies wholly on the generous sponsorship of Everen, The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewelry, Gorhams Ltd., and beverages for all participants provided by John Barritt & Son.”

Everen spokesperson Karyn Peixoto said, “Everen Group is proud to be the title sponsor of this year’s Bermuda Sandcastle Competition. This event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our vibrant community while enjoying the stunning beauty of Bermuda’s Horseshoe Bay. Good luck to all the competitors, and we hope everyone has a wonderful time on the beach.”

Tim Morrison, General Manager of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, said, “We are delighted to be able to support the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition once again. This competition has become one of the fun activities occurring during the Bermuda Labour Day weekend. Year after year, the event is a wonderful way for friends and families of both island residents and visitors to celebrate the beauty of Horseshoe Bay Beach while having some fun in the sun. We look forward to seeing the creative pink sand concepts that this year’s event will bring.”

Alexandra Mosher, owner of Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewelry, said, “Could there be a more beautiful place to create community art than Bermuda’s beloved Horseshoe Bay Beach? It’s wonderful to experience locals and visitors coming together to design sculptural masterpieces in pink sand, while soaking up the sun at the water’s edge. We’re thrilled to be sponsors of this incredible event and look forward to witnessing each design emerge on August 31st.”

A John Barritt & Son spokesperson said, “John Barritt & Son Ltd is happy to provide free refreshments for the participants and hopes that everyone enjoys the event.”

Hannah Emmerson, organizer of the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition, said, “We are so very grateful to our generous sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible. We hope that the public will join us on the beach for a fun event that the whole family can enjoy.”

The spokesperson said, “For more information, updates, and inspiration, please go to our Facebook page @TheBermudaSandcastleCompetition, Instagram @bermudasandcastle or our website. Any questions about the event can be sent to hello@sandcastle.bm.”
