B1 Weekend To Feature Screening & Discussion
The B1 Empowerment Weekend on September 20-21, 2024, will feature ‘B1: The Movie’ screenings and discussions with filmmaker Dr. Ric Mathis.
A spokesperson said, “On Friday and Saturday, September 20th and 21st, 2024, an empowering weekend has been planned for community engagement featuring a screening of the powerful film, B1:The Movie, and discussions with Atlanta filmmaker, Dr. Ric Mathis.
“The B1 Empowerment Weekend is a collaboration between Ashay University, Bermuda Wellness Space, Channel 82, and Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda, and will be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. B1: The Movie powerfully highlights issues that continue to negatively impact the Black community and suggests the development of a community-driven code of conduct to improve all aspects of well-being for our community. An award-winning documentary filmmaker, Dr. Ric Mathis, made the film in conjunction with Dr. Boyce Watkins, a financial advisor and author of several books promoting financial literacy and generational wealth. B1: The Movie not only brings attention to what impacts the Black community, but suggests tangible solutions and asks film viewers the thought-provoking question, “When will Black People put Black People first?”
“Members of the public are invited to attend the B1 Empowerment Weekend featuring two opportunities to screen the film in its entirety:
- Friday, September 20th from 5:15 to 8:30 PM:
- B1 Meet and Greet Happy Hour: beverages and light refreshments
- B1 film screening and conversation with filmmaker, Dr. Ric Mathis
- Saturday, September 21st from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM:
- B1 film screening will be accompanied with tea, coffee and pastries
- B1 strategic breakouts for participant discussions and developing action items
- After lunch, a B1 panel discussion featuring Bermuda community leaders
- Special screening of the documentary short, Healing History, followed by further discussion on self-knowledge empowerment
“The financial investment for this empowering and inspiring weekend event is $40 for adults and $25 for students. The ticket price is inclusive of the entire weekend event – film screenings, discussions, refreshments – and persons may attend one or both events as their schedule permits. Various merchandise, e.g., books by Van Putten and publications offered by CURB, will also be available for purchase.
