Committee Members To Look Into Cyber Attack

September 28, 2024 | 9 Comments

The Speaker of the House of Assembly announced the members of the Joint Select Committee to look into the cyber attack — which occurred in September 2023 — with the committee to be chaired by PLP MP Lawrence Scott, and the members to include PLP MP Scott Simmons, PLP MP Anthony Richardson, OBA MP Robert King and OBA Senator Dwayne Robinson.

In a statement earlier this month, the government said, “One year on, Bermuda stands more resilient, having learned vital lessons from the attack. As the Government continues to develop and enhance its cybersecurity framework, it remains focused on protecting the island’s digital infrastructure and preparing for future challenges in the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats.”

  1. Hey says:

Why do we need a committee for this?
What happened, why it happened and the impact of it has already been determined.

    So why the committee?

“What happened, why it happened and the impact of it has already been determined”

Has it? Please will you direct me to where that has been reported.

  2. Hilarious says:

Why is Mr. IT not involved? Wait. He was in charge and was involved in the complete and utter failure to protect our government’s computer systems, and no one has been fired! Our CIO is still here and making a six-figure salary.

So, what technical skills do these members bring to the table? Their email and smartphone use skills are excellent, but I do not see any required expertise. Are they Facebook and Instagram users? I’m not getting any warm and fuzzy feelings from this group.

Look over the PLP & OBA webpages:
PLP MP Lawrence Scott – zip, nada, zero relevant expertise
PLP MP Scott Simmons – zip, nada, zero relevant expertise
PLP MP Anthony Richardson – zip, nada, zero relevant expertise
OBA MP Robert King – zip, nada, zero relevant expertise
OBA Senator Dwayne Robinson – zip, nada, zero relevant expertise

Will Mr. IT release all the information to this esteemed panel, or is it still classified with no admission that it even exists?

    • world watching says:

never be released. remember its national security ( can’t divulge our nuclear military secrets, bank accounts as we are a world power house) IT NEVER happened. How much was paid to hackers and what personnel ( us your civilians that vote et al ) was stolen.

      • Hilarious says:

An election is coming up. Before voting, we cannot have everyone read about the incompetence of our leaders, government employees, and paid cybersecurity “experts.” Mr. IT was informed in Dec 2021 of a breach where a hacker from Pakistan used Mr. IT’s name as the sender in the email. Apparently, no protective actions were taken because hackers came back and laughed at Bermuda’s cybersecurity measures.

At least they will not be digging in to my computer looking to feasting on this bad apple which is possessed with deamons ,a faulty program riddled with dubiouse spelling interpretatons and by numeriouse duplications of the word “THE” be it the the most used words through out the the universe and including grammatical inexactitudes, notably refered to the cart and horse syndrome .

Good job the thing does not have a T.C.D . drivers license.

I know that it is not right to watch the thing slowly disappear in to cyber space, pass away in human terms to the burial ground of lost and un forgettable souls of 01010101010100001. it did at one time tell me at a glance that it loved me as it asked asked for bail.
Order in the court ……… “Three beers please “. Thank you !
Never the less in legal termology we have and also its for bares have been friends for nearly a century.

  3. Ringmaster says:

Oh look, we’re doing something. What are the terms of reference? Will experts be called? Will the public know what happened? Was it loss of public data or ransomware (or both) and if so how much was paid (and to who)? What a waste of time and money, but this is classic PLP cover up.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

      “Oh look, we’re doing something.”

Yes, we are forming a committee to investigate why the horse bolted when he saw that his stable door was left wide open.
