Premier Attends Paralympic Closing Ceremony
Premier David Burt joined other heads of government and thousands of spectators for the Paralympics Closing Ceremonies at Stade de France, Paris this evening.
A government spokesperson said, “The Premier said he was delighted to attend the celebratory event and cheer on Bermuda’s Paralympians Yushae DeSilva-Andrade and Jessica Lewis who both achieved top five finishes at the Games. Residents will know that Yushae competed in Boccia and Jessica competed in the 100m at this year’s Paralympic Games.
“One of the highlights of the evening was the Premier’s engagement with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who greeted Premier Burt and other leaders in attendance at the Ceremony.
“It was truly a celebratory occasion and it was a delight to see the Bermuda delegation including Yushae and Jessica,” the Premier said. “There’s no question that Jessica’s and Yushae’s performances have truly inspired us all and Bermuda is so proud of their accomplishments.”
A government spokesperson said, “Tomorrow [Sept. 9], the Premier and the Government of Bermuda delegation continue their engagement in Europe, with planned meetings with OECD officials. The Premier will then travel to Ireland, where he will hold meetings with the Irish Minister of Finance and the Lord Mayor of Dublin. Tomorrow’s meetings will be in keeping with sharing the Bermuda story by reminding our partners of the importance of Bermuda’s role in the global insurance and reinsurance markets and highlighting the island’s strong commitment to compliance with international standards, cooperation and transparency.
“The public will be aware that the Premier is visiting the UK and Europe to participate in a series of key meetings and events on behalf of the Ministry of Finance aimed at fostering relationships and highlighting Bermuda’s significance as a global business jurisdiction.
“This past week was a busy one for Premier Burt which included engagement with the UK Foreign Secretary the Rt. Hon. David Lammy and Baroness Scotland, the Commonwealth General Secretary; a visit with the Lord Mayor of the City of London, the Hon. Michael Mainelli; and media engagement with the Financial Times. The Premier also jointly hosted ABIR’s 17th International Insurance Regulatory Dialogue opening reception and formally celebrated the Bermuda Brussels Office’s 5 Year Anniversary.
“The Premier is supported on this visit by the Financial Secretary, Chidozie Ofoego; Kenneth Joaquin, Registrar of Companies; Kimberley Durrant, Director Bermuda Government’s London Office and Aliyyah Ahad, Head of European Affairs & Policy, Brussels Office.”
Our Premier in Paris. How very nice. But I cannot recall one of our previous Premiers ever attending anything to do with the Paralympics, and Bermuda has had competitors in the Paralympics for decades.
Spot on.
Election coming
That would explain all the calls from pollsters that started over the summer and are now several times a week.
Big time. Just wait until your MP with a sidekick comes knocking on your door for a “listening tour.”
“Just wait until your MP with a sidekick comes knocking …”
That seems unlikely. I have not had an MP knock on my door since 2004 (the year of the big deceit).
Awww, your MP is lazy. Mr. Sleepy is our MP and he is hard working and door knocking. Can’t fault him for being out there.
Is your area a PLP or OBA strong hold?
Someone needs to tell Mr. Big that you do not wear brown shoes (Penney loafers?) and it looks like white socks, with a dark suit. Note that all the other men are wearing polished black shoes. No doubt Macron and others had a good laugh at Mr. Big’s fashion sense.
