Raleigh Bermuda will be hosting free community awareness presentations on “Understanding Gang Grooming” on September 21st and 26th.

A spokesperson said, “Raleigh Bermuda is calling to action to safeguard our children and community. Join Raleigh Bermuda in standing against gang violence and support Raleigh Bermuda’s Anti-Gang Violence Campaign.

“Raleigh Bermuda is proud to host free community awareness presentations on ‘Understanding Gang Grooming’ in partnership with Y.E.S, Hamilton SDA Church, and St. Paul’s AME Church.

“Raleigh’s featured speaker is Mr. Teledo Breary [Y.E.S Community Information Specialist], who will provide important insights into recognizing anti-social behaviors and the warning signs of gang grooming with youth.

“Mr. Teledo Breary founded the Youth Education and Safety program, which addresses critical issues such as drugs, peer pressure, gang grooming, bullying, and consent education. The program aims to empower young individuals with the knowledge and skills to make informed, positive decisions.

“The first presentation will be held this Saturday, September 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The same presentation will be offered again on the following Thursday, September 26, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.”

Raleigh Bermuda Executive Director Dany de Rodriguez says, “Raleigh has been addressing gang violence and anti-social behaviors since its conception in 2004. For 20 years now, Raleigh Bermuda continuously works with underserved youth to help them manage and overcome the ‘day-to-day’ risks such as gangs, drugs, abuse, anger management, depression, and criminal activities. Raleigh Bermuda is the only organization on the island that holds an ‘Anti-Violence / Anti-Gang’ Campaign in the community and offers scholarships to Bermudian youths to travel overseas to partake in a 10-week life-changing expedition in either Costa Rica, Borneo, or South Africa.”

The spokesperson said, “Raleigh Bermuda also hosted a community awareness event in July 2022 titled “Drugs, Gangs and Corner Boys: Is My Child Being Recruited?”. Raleigh Bermuda shared research it had conducted, including interviews with young people involved in gang activity. The presentation was led by Raleigh Bermuda Executive Director Dany de Rodriguez, Police Constable Khalid Pitcher of the BPS Police Gang Targeting Unit, and Camily Lovell, an internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor at Pathways Bermuda.”
