The Black Pony Gallery is selling artwork in the temporary exhibition, Alternative Voices: A Perspective on Contemporary Art from the Azores, which is on display at the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard.

The exhibition is in honour of the 175th anniversary of the first arrival of Portuguese Immigrants to Bermuda with a specific feature on the contemporary art movement in the Azores.

A spokesperson said: “Like Bermuda, the Azores is an isolated archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, and we share a sense of belonging and connection with our land and ocean.

“The migration of individuals and families from Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde and mainland Portugal has woven a fabric of interconnected histories and cultural legacies.

“This exhibition honours these connections and builds on this legacy.

“This beautiful exhibition is set inside the Commissioner’s House, across the hallway from the museum’s permanent Azores and Bermuda exhibit.

“Three talented Azorean artists are featured in Alternative Voices. Filipe Franco uses natural elements like limestone and clay to blur the boundary between painting and sculpture.

“Susana Alexio Lopes plays with fire, literally, burning her wooden objects and creating new narratives.

“Leonor Almeida Pereira, who also co-curated the exhibition, experiments with acrylic paint, water and movement to create fresh perspectives on the landscape.”

Elena Strong, the executive director of the National Museum of Bermuda, said: “The National Museum of Bermuda is not moving into the commercial arena of art selling; rather, the museum is responding to the community’s keen interest in keeping this artwork here in Bermuda.

“Having the artwork remain in Bermuda is a continuation of a legacy of cultural exchange and connectedness with the Azores.

“This is a rare opportunity, and we are grateful that a significant portion of each sale will benefit the museum and our work. Thank you to all who make the investment.”
