NMB/Grundy Youth Photography Competition
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] is inviting local students to participate in The Grundy Youth Photography Competition.
A spokesperson said, “The National Museum of Bermuda is inviting all local students to participate in the sixth year of The Grundy Youth Photography Competition. In honour of Mrs. Joy Grundy’s passing last year, the competition’s title has been adjusted to recognise both her and her husband, Dr. Reg Grundy: ‘Your Eyes on Bermuda: The Grundy Youth Photography Competition, In Memory of Dr. Reg Grundy and Joy Chambers Grundy.’
“Now in its sixth year, the competition welcomes all primary, middle and high school students to demonstrate their appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment in memory of Dr. Grundy. It is open to all local photography enthusiasts aged 7-18 who currently reside in Bermuda. Students are asked to photograph a theme of interest: People of Bermuda, Bermuda Buildings, or Bermuda Wildlife & Nature, and capture their chosen theme using a smart phone or digital camera.
“Students must submit photos under the following age groups: 7–10, 11–14, and 15–18. Entries can be any/all themes [People of Bermuda, Bermuda Buildings, or Bermuda Wildlife and Nature], but only one photograph per theme will be accepted. Using a smart phone or digital camera, students should submit a minimum file size of 1MB with a maximum file size of 50 MB.
“The format should be JPEG online and the resolution a minimum of 300 dpi. In honouring Dr. Grundy’s signature style, all images should be submitted straight out of the camera, with no alterations using image editing software or digital enhancements.
“This year’s judges are Dr. Deborah Atwood, NMB Curator, Chinni Mahadevan, Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries Curator, and Lisa Howie, Founder of Black Pony Gallery, Co-founder of Atlantic Arthouse, and Education Consultant at NMB.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong said, “We are so thankful to the late Mrs. Joy Grundy and her dedicated team, as well as to our loyal local sponsors: A.F. Smith, Clarien Bank, and the Phoenix Stores, whose generous support makes this competition possible year after year. Each year, we are increasingly amazed by the growing number and exceptional quality of student submissions.
“This competition offers students a unique opportunity to cultivate their creativity, patience, and visual literacy, encouraging them to see and interpret the world in new and meaningful ways. We can’t wait to witness the incredible entries for this year’s event.”
The spokesperson said, “Winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House at the Museum and published in MARITimes, NMB’s annual magazine, as well as the on NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites. Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank, gift certificates at Phoenix Stores, and the ‘Best in Show’ will win a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters and a carrying case.
“In addition to individual prizes, the school with the most submissions [based on percentage] will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith.
“The deadline for submissions for ages 7–10 is October 29; 11–14 is October 30; 15–18 is October 31. Submissions must be made online only on the website. An award ceremony will be held on Thursday, December 5, details forthcoming.”
