BRSC Highlights Pedestrian Safety Awareness
The Bermuda Road Safety Council highlighted pedestrian safety, urging pedestrians to stay visible and drivers to be cautious to prevent accidents.
A spokesperson said, “This October, the Bermuda Road Safety Council is dedicating the month to raising awareness about ‘Pedestrian Safety’. As we approach the shorter days and darker evenings, it’s more important than ever to ensure that both pedestrians and drivers are doing their part to prevent accidents and keep each other safe.
“For pedestrians, safety begins with visibility. Wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions, can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Always walk on the sidewalk where possible, or stay as far to the side of the road as you can if there isn’t one. Face oncoming traffic to stay aware of approaching vehicles, and always use designated crosswalks to cross the road. Stay alert by avoiding distractions like mobile phones or headphones, which can prevent you from hearing or seeing approaching dangers.
“Drivers, your attention is crucial to pedestrian safety. Slow-down in areas where pedestrians are likely to be present, such as near schools, bus stops, or in residential areas. Be ready to yield at crosswalks and always keep an eye out for people stepping off curbs. At night, when visibility is reduced, be extra cautious and always reduce your speed. Distractions like texting or using your phone can have devastating consequences, so stay focused on the road at all times.
“The Bermuda Road Safety Council urges all road users to be more vigilant this month and every day, as we work together to make our roads safer for everyone. By raising awareness and encouraging safe behaviors, we can reduce accidents and protect our pedestrians. Let’s all do our part in keeping Bermuda’s roads safe.
“Cautious Drivers = Safer Roads = Safer Bermuda.”
