Raleigh To Host Trek Fundraiser For 20th Year
In honor of its 20th anniversary, Raleigh International Bermuda will host a trek fundraiser on December 1, 2024.
A spokesperson said, “This year marks twenty years in operation for charity Raleigh International Bermuda. Founded in Bermuda in 2004 by Michael Spurling, Raleigh Bermuda, is a local registered charity #710 focused on empowering young Bermudians to set positive goals and take control of their lives by realizing their full potential through experiential learning programmes that extend beyond the classroom and outside of Bermuda.
“Raleigh International Bermuda offers two core programmes. The Brave Programme is for youths aged 14 to 17 and the Venturer Programmes is for young adults aged 17 to 24. The programme structure and philosophy of the Bermuda organisation are based on internationally recognised principals of experiential learning and are designed to help young people develop skills and self-confidence in a fun yet challenging environment beyond the classroom and workplace.
“The charity’s goal is to empower young Bermudians to set positive goals and take control of their lives. By helping them to see that they are stronger than they thought possible, they can realise their full potential and effectively manage the ‘day to day’ risks they face including drugs, alcohol, crime, bullying, loss of motivation, low self-esteem, and lack of self-confidence.
“Raleigh provides afterschool programmes, summer camps, training camps and treks where participants learn survival skills, critical thinking skills, and participate in team building exercises. The Venturers also partake in an overseas expedition which is 10-weeks trip to Costa Rica, South Africa, Kenya, or Malaysia. Participants learn to build on the three pillars of Raleigh which are: Environment, Adventure and Community. Previous expeditions have seen the Bermuda Raleigh Venturers complete treks in Nepal, India, Tanzania, Namibia, and Nicaragua.”
Executive Director, Dany de Rodríguez stated, “Raleigh International Bermuda recognizes that there is a definite need in Bermuda now more than ever to support our youths especially as they transition into adulthood. There are many more challenges facing today’s young adults than there were 30 years ago. Offering programming that support our young people especially during their transition into young adulthood is crucial. Teaching them skills they can use to make positive decisions as young adults will help them thrive in their life’s journey and avoid toxic environments and relationships.”
Raleigh Alumnus Krista Maria Looby said, “Raleigh had and still has an immense and positive impact in my life. The welcoming and supportive atmosphere I receive from alumni in Bermuda, and past participants I’ve met in other countries is still ongoing. My teamwork and leadership skills learned from the Venturer program is still in use to this day, assisting my everyday challenges and daily work interactions. I can always reach out to Raleigh both in times of crisis, and if I need normal life advice. The educational workshops, and outdoor survival activities available throughout the year, to participants and alumni, are also a huge benefit in terms of independent learning. I am grateful to be part of such a giving and authentic charity.”
The spokesperson said, “To mark its 20th anniversary and raise funds Raleigh is hosting a Trek on Sunday December 1, 2024. Starting at 9AM in Dockyard the Trek is just shy of 7 miles and finished at Whale Bay. During the trek participants will face 3 exciting survival skill challenges.
