It was ‘A Grand Musicale’ evening organized by the Women’s Day Committee of St. Paul A.M.E. Church on Saturday, October 26 at 7.00pm, highlighting the Women in the Arts Concert. Host pastor Rev. Nicholas Genevieve-Tweed sat with admiration as a flawless program was delivered with 15 acts for patrons and general attendees. The organizing committee should be commended for their hard work to find 11 sponsors to ensure the success of one of the best concerts of the year. The pink program is a keepsake, presented with great detail and featuring a first-class order of performances. This was indeed a memorable night that showcased an impressive variety of genres.

With an excellent emcee, Dr. Beverly-Ann Taylor, ensuring a smooth evening, the program opened with a prayer from Rev. Judith Gardner and continued seamlessly.

History will record that we were treated to:

  • The Band: “Kila’se” set the standard high, led by Bandmaster Raynika Brangman [saxophone], Dawn Fubler [drums], and Sheila Smith [piano], performing You Raise Me Up and If I Ain’t Got You.
  • Dance: The Bermuda Annual Conference Music and Christian Arts Ministry performed Make Room by McReynolds, with three dancers using sign language for a powerful ending.
  • Duet: Charo Hollis and Samantha Smith, with Raymond George on piano, performed When I Think and For Every Mountain, with strong voices and a touch of style.
  • Monologue: Brianna Lightbourne delivered an impactful original piece, impressing with her conviction and maturity at just 14.
  • Soloist: Chauntee Thompson captivated with Goodness of God by Bethel Music, showcasing her bright potential.
  • Comedian: Gina Davis, a household name, delighted the audience with her comedic timing and relatable humor.
  • Soloist: Toni Robinson, a fan favorite, delivered a stunning performance of *Total Praise* by Richard Smallwood.
  • Sign Language: Hands of Faith performed I Trust in God [Elevation Worship] with excellence.
  • Steel Pan: Laree Talbot played Ordinary People [John Legend], delivering a beautiful rendition.

  • Guitarist: Shani Smith gave a flawless performance of Reckless Love [Asbury], demonstrating both skill and potential.
  • Puppeteer: Tales with Telle charmed with two puppets and skillful storytelling.
  • Violinist: Seraiah George, the youngest performer, played Muzette by Bach with impressive poise.
  • Flags: Rhona Pedro performed to Why Me Lord [Kristofferson] with grace and artistry.

The evening concluded with the St. Paul A.M.E. Church Praise Team performing Praise by Elevation Worship, providing the perfect closing note.

In closing, I was raised in the A.M.E. Church and learned valuable organizational skills from the seniors who encouraged youth involvement. While church numbers may be down, it was encouraging to see that the high standards persist, evident in the program’s quality and prompt start. The emcee, A.M.E. trained, kept the program flowing smoothly with light-hearted comments.

Finding a title for this article wasn’t easy [15 varied acts] until I read in The Bermuda Recorder about A Grand Musicale held by the North Village All Boys and Girls Junior Band in 1962. Our history is rich, and that legacy was reflected on Saturday night. Salutations and commendations to all involved!
