The Bermuda Bicycle Association celebrated its 50th anniversary with a sold-out banquet at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, uniting cycling legends, current athletes, and supporters to honor five decades of contributions to the sport.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Bicycle Association [BBA] marked its 50th Anniversary in grand style with a sold-out Banquet at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club [RHADC] on Sunday evening. The event brought together 125 attendees, including cycling legends, current athletes, and devoted supporters, for a night filled with nostalgia and celebration.

“Messages of congratulations and support added an international dimension to the occasion, with letters received from Union Cycliste Internationale [UCI] President, Mr. David Lappartient, and Pan American Cycling Confederation [COPACI] President, Jose Manuel. Their words underscored the global impact and recognition of the BBA’s contributions to the sport over the past 50 years.

“The evening featured special guest Leopold Kuchler, the BBA’s first President, and guest speaker Frankie Andreu, who shared inspiring words. Seven past Presidents of the Association, including Peter Dunne, were in attendance, along with three former Olympians – Earl Godfrey [1984 Los Angeles], Clyde Wilson [1984 Los Angeles], and Elliot Hubbard [1996 Atlanta].

“A highlight of the evening was the joyful reunion of members from the 1970s, whose excitement and enthusiasm were palpable as they reconnected and relived their racing days. The continuous slideshow of historical photos and articles provided a poignant journey through the Association’s history, sparking conversations and memories.

“The event also honoured the individuals who have shaped the sport, from long-serving organisers like Jennifer Hedges to racing pioneers like Jim Butterfield and Robert Lightbourne. The presence of athletes who remain active today, such as Tracy Wright and Paulo Medeiros, demonstrated the lasting spirit of Bermuda’s cycling community.”

BBA President Peter Dunne captured the essence of the evening in his remarks: “In this room tonight, we have the past, present, and future of cycling. Long may it last.”

A spokesperson added, “The Banquet’s success is a testament to the dedication of the organising committee and the unwavering support of the cycling community. The celebrations continue with the Legends Ride, ensuring that the legacy of the BBA lives on for generations to come.”
