BRSC Urges Drivers To Respect Speed Limits
“Speeding is one of the most dangerous and reckless behaviors on Bermuda’s roads, putting lives at risk every day,” the Bermuda Road Safety Council said.
A spokesperson said, “In a small island community like ours, the consequences of speeding are not just statistics—they are the devastating loss of loved ones, the pain of life-altering injuries, and the emotional and financial burdens that families and communities must bear.
“When drivers exceed speed limits, reaction times are reduced, increasing the likelihood of crashes. At high speeds, the severity of accidents escalates, leading to fatal outcomes and irreversible damage. Speeding also endangers pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users, who often have little chance to avoid a speeding vehicle.
“In Bermuda, where roads are narrow, winding, and often shared by multiple types of users, the margin for error is small. A moment of recklessness can result in lifelong consequences—innocent lives lost, families shattered, and a community left grieving.
“It’s time for all of us to take responsibility. By choosing to slow down, drivers protect not only themselves but also their neighbors, friends, and fellow Bermudians. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the choice to respect speed limits is a simple but powerful way to prevent tragedy and keep our island safe.
“Remember, it only takes a second to change a life forever—don’t let that moment be defined by speed.
“Cautious Drivers = Safer Roads = Safer Bermuda.”

Without condoning the behavior of rather more than a few, what is the speed limit? Is 35kph still the island limit, if so why is the norm 60+? Why is 35kph used by tourism marketing when it is a joke?
Local signs posted can also vary between 25 and 35kph in certain spots. Totally ignored.
The legal speed limit is still 35kph for most of the islands with 25kph in some places.
In reality, there is no speed limit anymore. The Bermuda Police service has long given up enforcing the Road Traffic Act.
Speed limit signs no longer have any meaning. Stop signs no longer have any meaning. Even obeying traffic lights is optional these days.
