Column: Lindsay Simmons On Throne Speech
[Opinion column written by the PLP Senator Lindsay Simmons]
In our 2024 Throne Speech, we made one thing clear: the PLP is here to protect and uplift Bermuda’s most vulnerable and to continue making steady progress towards a fairer Bermuda for all of us. From seniors and persons with disabilities to low-income families and those experiencing homelessness, we’re making sure that everyone is treated with care, respect, and dignity.
First, we’re putting more support directly into the hands of those who need it. We’re amending the Financial Assistance Regulations to provide an extra $100 monthly allowance for seniors to cover basic hygiene expenses. Our elders have given so much to this community; it’s our responsibility to honour them and ensuring they can obtain essential needs without barriers.
But we’re not stopping there. We also will be introducing a Disabilities Act that will guarantee equal access to services, facilities, and jobs. This law will build on the registry we created for persons with disabilities and aligns with our commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. To us, inclusivity and fairness for all isn’t just a slogan—it’s a commitment.
Addressing family instability at its roots is key. Through the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, we’re launching a cross-ministry team to work closely with high-risk families. This team will provide life skills training, stable housing, nutritious food, and medical access. By tackling multi-generational trauma and offering real support, we’re setting these families up not just to survive, but to thrive.
Domestic violence needs bold action, and that’s why we’re establishing a specialised domestic violence court. This court will speed up protection orders for victims and hold perpetrators accountable. Paired with our Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Committee, we’re building a network of support and safety for those facing abuse.
At the end of the day, the PLP believes in a Bermuda where no one is left behind. When we invest in our most vulnerable, we build a society that’s not just stronger, but more compassionate. Let’s keep fighting for a Bermuda that is fairer for all of us.

The PLP want people to struggle , so they can do hand outs to make those individuals think the PLP are helping them and gain their vote. It’s a mind game. THE PLP through running the country for the majority of last quarter of a century caused you to be where you are. They caused you to need handouts. Wake up and see the real.
