Devonshire MPs Honor Canon James Francis
Devonshire MPs paid tribute to the late Canon James Francis, calling him a “man of great spiritual and community leadership.”
A spokesperson said, “Today, as men and MPs, we offer our tribute to a man of great spiritual and community leadership to parishioners of Christ Church and people of Devonshire. Canon Francis was a servant of the whole island, from the Cathedral on Pembroke to the Christ Church in the heart of Devonshire. There, he opened the doors for the next generation of leadership and inspired increased community activism.
“Always the consummate provider of encouragement and advice. He appreciated the weight of service, leadership and responsibility and always offered us his support. While at Christ Church he was inclusive and welcoming. This was also reflective in the strong group of parishioners while he was there. He leaves a strong legacy in Devonshire and beyond. It is an honour to have met his acquaintance. Rest in Peace faithful servant.”
Deputy Premier Walter Roban said, “Canon Francis was more than a fraternity brother or spiritual source to me; he was a trusted presence of wisdom and kindness in my life for over two decades. Every time we reconnected, whether it be a meeting on the street or me calling him to speak to him as a friend and brother, no matter how much time had passed, our conversations felt effortless, meaningful, and filled with mutual respect – a bond I will always treasure.”
Minister Diallo Rabain said, “As a fellow member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, I had the honour of calling him my fraternity brother. His contributions to our brotherhood were both significant and heartfelt, leaving an indelible mark on our fraternity and the wider community.
“We find solace in the words of Scripture, “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.” We hold onto the blessed assurance that we will reunite with our dear brother in a place where parting is no more.
“May we honour Canon Francis’s legacy by embodying the love and dedication he so generously shared, until we meet again on those golden streets.”
MP Wayne Caines stated, “Canon Francis was someone who never let us feel anything less than being proud to be Pond Dogs.”
MP Chris Famous said, “So, as the MPs and of Devonshire, we collectively salute Canon Francis and his legacy to Bermuda, her people and our beloved Parish of Devonshire.”
