The Gina Spence Program [GSP] expressed their support and response to the National Violence Reduction Strategy unveiled by Minister of National Security Michael Weeks.

“Firstly, I want to commend Minister Weeks for his dedication and leadership in addressing the pressing issue of gang violence in our community,” said Gina Spence-Virgil. “Your collaborative strategy demonstrates a commitment to addressing this critical issue, and I deeply appreciate the enormous responsibility you’ve taken on.”

The spokesperson said, “As someone who has worked in this space for over three decades through GSP and as someone who has personally experienced the loss of two family members to gang and gun violence, she emphasized the deep and lasting pain that these tragedies bring.”

“GSP is steadfast and focused on ensuring that no heart grieves alone and that our children are healed and not hurt by violence. We are proud of the fact that our Champions Program is the only one of its kind in Bermuda that critically responds to and tracks the progress of children affected by gun and gang-related homicide.”

“To date, the Champions Program has recorded 107 Champions, with 30 currently active clients. The program’s success is underscored by significant outcomes, including:

  • 96% of Champions graduating from high school.
  • 91% engaging in sports or extracurricular activities.
  • 88% receiving grief and loss support.

“These results highlight the profound impact of the Champions Program and its ability to help children lead successful, fulfilling lives.

“The Champions Program addresses the critical issue of unaddressed grief and loss, which often leads to social and mental health challenges in the community. The program provides wraparound services to children impacted by gun and gang violence, ensuring they receive comprehensive support tailored to their needs.

“Key activities include:

  • Crisis response, including a 24-hour mobile crisis response service.
  • Clinical support and grief counseling services.
  • Case management focused on strengthening stability and well-being.
  • Hardship support with essential need vouchers distributed monthly to clients.
  • Restorative socials, offering quarterly opportunities for connection and healing.

“The program’s outcomes aim to improve resilience, reduce environmental stressors, increase positive social interactions, provide immediate access to healthy support networks, and achieve a measurable decrease in trauma-related symptoms.”

“The Gina Spence Program has a long history of impactful community work,” said Gina Spence- Virgil. “The Champions Program, with its targeted approach, aligns closely with the goals of the National Violence Reduction Strategy. Our team would be honored to serve as a resource and support as these initiatives are implemented.”

The spokesperson said, “While GSP supports the emphasis on youth and the noble idea of redemption over punishment, Spence-Virgil posed critical questions to the strategic approach:

  • What data supports the feasibility of collaboration between victims and perpetrators?
  • How will grieving families and children—arguably the most vulnerable—be supported through this process?

“GSP also seeks clarification on the strategy’s priority areas, the engagement plan for high-risk youth, and the timeline for implementation to better align resources and partnerships.”

“Minister Weeks, I know you have an incredibly challenging task ahead, but I want to reiterate my gratitude for your efforts,” said Spence-Virgil. “The Gina Spence Program stands ready to collaborate and contribute to these initiatives, ensuring that the community’s needs are met with compassion and a focus on healing.”
