Nonprofit Alliance Response To Throne Speech
The Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda issued a response following the government’s Throne Speech.
A spokesperson said, “The Nonprofit Alliance of Bermuda commends the government for the focus of today’s Throne Speech on early intervention and prevention, cost of living reduction and ongoing collaboration with the Third Sector.
“Continued emphasis on education reform as well as development of trade skills, addressing violence and antisocial behaviour through early intervention and prevention, addressing substance abuse through the reintroduction of the Bermuda Youth Counselling Services, and encouraging greater preventative health visits through changes to FutureCare and HIP are all positive indicators of a commitment to preventative measures. We know it is socially responsible and more cost effective to take early measures than to remedy situations when it is too late – so from an economic and social perspective these priorities are welcome.
“We are also encouraged by the Government’s intentions to work collaboratively with the Third Sector, noting plans for addressing domestic violence, multigenerational trauma and homelessness through coordination and collaboration with nonprofits. We continue to encourage the government to ensure their commitment to this includes funding for third sector organisations, who have front line roles implementing these priorities.
“It was also positive to hear the intention of the government to use new corporate income tax revenues to reduce or eliminate taxes that increase the cost of living, and in the long run to establish a Sovereign Wealth Fund for strategic investment. This in particular is truly exciting. The economic benefits of debt reduction and long-term revenue generation will have profound impacts on community issues, if invested in a socially wise manner. We, as a sector look forward to working with the government to bring these goals to fruition and build a better Bermuda.
