Photos: BNT Student Art Competition Winners
The Bermuda National Trust [BNT] announced the winners of its 2024 Student Art Competition sponsored by Sompo International.
A spokesperson said, “This year’s theme was ‘Worth Protecting’. Artwork was submitted from primary, middle and senior school students across the island, with 145 entries in total. Initial judging was by artists Jahbarri Wilson, Jill Amos Raine, Fiona Murdoch and Meredith Andrews. Final judging took place at Sompo International, where all members of staff viewed the finalists work and voted.”
Sompo VP Alana Anderson said: “Sompo was once again thrilled to sponsor such an amazing showcase of local talent from across the island. The artists interpretations of the theme ‘Worth Protecting’ spawned much conversation and even some debate about what is most important to Bermuda’s uniqueness. On behalf of all the staff of Sompo I would like to thank all of the students who participated. Trying to decide on winners was truly a difficult task.”
The spokesperson said, “In the 9–12-year age group, first place and a prize of $300 was awarded to Milena Millett, who depicted within a triangle all the things she thinks are worth protecting in Bermuda, including our ocean, our people and culture, our friendliness, our homes, and our flora and fauna. In second place with a prize of $175 was Jayla Woodley-Herbert and in third place with a prize of $75 was Julia Stoppa. Honorable mentions were given to Genesis Bell and Leonardo Stoppa.
“In the 13–18-year age group, first place and a prize of $500 went to Dhakiya Burch-Waldron for a stunning, colourful image of a girl holding a turtle, surrounded by corals and reef fish. In second place, with a prize of $300 was Luke Douglas and in third place was Mariah Matthews, who won $175. Honorable mentions were awarded to Zoe Mir and Mackenzie Lewis.
“An exhibition of the winning pieces will be on display in the reception area of Sompo International at Waterloo House from Monday 2 December until Friday 13 December.”
