PLP Respond To FDM Housing Policies

November 15, 2024 | 0 Comments

“The FDM’s plan to phase out rent control should be deeply troubling for Bermudian families,” the PLP said.

A spokesperson said, “Removing rent protections without substantial safeguards would open the door to skyrocketing rents, putting basic housing out of reach for those who are already struggling to make ends meet. At a time when the cost of living is a pressing concern for all Bermudians, we will not support policies that deepen inequality and displace the most vulnerable among us.

“The Progressive Labour Party understands that reform is needed in Bermuda’s housing market. That is why our 2024 Throne Speech outlined a balanced approach to updating housing policy through a comprehensive landlord-tenant framework that will improve protections for landlords against bad tenants, and protect tenants from bad landlords. These reforms are designed to address long standing issues without sacrificing those in greatest need.

“More importantly, via the Bermuda Housing Corporation [BHC], we have renovated and provided 70 units for affordable housing over the last year. This adds to the 700 units that BHC already provides.

“The PLP’s commitment remains clear: we will not leave the most needy Bermudians behind. We will continue to provide tangible and fair solutions for housing for our fellow Bermudians.”
