BPSU Marks International Migrants Day
“On International Migrants Day, the BPSU and its Migrant Workers Committee stand in solidarity with all migrant workers,” the Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] said.
A spokesperson said, “International Migrants Day, celebrated on December 18th, provides an opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of migrants and reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect their rights. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, this day serves as a reminder of the vital role migrants play in shaping and enriching our communities socially, economically, and culturally.
“Here in Bermuda, migrants play a pivotal role in many industries and services, dedicating their skills, expertise, and unique perspectives to the advancement of our nation. Their contributions strengthen our society by fostering diversity and innovation.
“The Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] is proud to have a Migrant Workers Committee that serves as a voice and advocate for migrant workers. This Committee, in conjunction with the BPSU’s Executive Committee and General Council, plays an instrumental role in addressing the unique challenges faced by migrants, ensuring fair treatment, and fostering unity across our workforce. Their work embodies our Union’s commitment to inclusion, equity, and respect for all.
“This year, we also echo a critical global message: “Migration should be a choice, not a necessity”. In today’s world, many migrants face difficult decisions fueled by circumstances beyond their control. Upholding their human rights, regardless of status, is essential in ensuring they live and work in dignity.
“Dehumanizing narratives about migrants -where they are unfairly blamed for societal challenges – must be challenged. The Global Compact for Migration reminds us that migrants are rights-holders who contribute significantly to improving communities worldwide. In Bermuda, we must focus on fostering an environment where every migrant worker can safely develop their skills, access opportunities, and receive the recognition they deserve.
“The International Labour Organization [ILO] has also affirmed that the right to a safe and healthy working environment is fundamental for all workers, including migrants. By ensuring these rights, we amplify the positive impact migrants have on our economy and society.
“On International Migrants Day, the BPSU and its Migrant Workers Committee stand in solidarity with all migrant workers. We celebrate their resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions. Let us move forward united, creating a community where diversity is cherished, human rights are protected, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
“Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind.”
And when you don’t have a short and long term strategy you fall for them. After all they got to be doing something. We have children running amock, gun violence evictions, homeless. IS that the best they can do? They need better leadership.
