‘Dignity, Equality, And Justice For Every Person’
“Today, on Human Rights Day Dec 10th , we pause to reflect on the importance of dignity, equality, and justice for every person in Bermuda. These principles remain at the heart of the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors’ work to protect and promote the rights of all individuals,” Minister of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors Tinee Furbert said.
A Government spokesperson said, “This year, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors has made significant strides. In partnership with the Human Rights Commission, the Ministry held a vital community conversation on disability rights, listening to the voices of those affected and identifying the barriers that still exist.
“The extension of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to Bermuda marks an important step forward, but recognizing there is more to do to turn commitments into meaningful change.
“As part of the Ministry’s continued efforts, we are exploring amendments to the Human Rights Act 1981 to address critical gaps in protections that are relevant to experiences of everyday life . These include:
- “Safeguards for persons facing discrimination when renting or occupying properties.
- “Protection for individuals discriminated against due to their source of lawful income, such as financial assistance.
- “Ensuring protection for those discriminated against because of their associations, such as race or political beliefs.
- “Addressing perceived discrimination, ensuring everyone is protected from assumptions or biases.
Minister Furbert stated, “The Ministry will make considerations for the Human Rights Commission to issue guidelines to provide guidance to clarify ‘family status’ within the Human Rights Act 1981, to reflect the diverse and evolving needs of Bermuda’s families. In addition, the Ministry reaffirms its dedication to eradicating violence against women and children, aligning our efforts with the UN Convention on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children.
“Human Rights Day reminds us of our shared responsibility to treat each other fairly and respectfully. We must continue to strengthen our protections so that everyone, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance, feels safe and valued in Bermuda. These are not abstract ideas—they are about the way we treat one another every day. This Ministry remains committed to listening, learning, and acting to create a more inclusive Bermuda for all Bermudians.”
I think this government did a good job taking peoples dignity away.
