BPS 2022 Crime Statistics Show 8.3% Decrease

January 11, 2025 | 11 Comments

The police released the 2022 Crime Statistics, showing that there were “2,902 offences in 2022 as compared with 3,165 offences in 2021″ which “reflects a decrease of 263 or 8.3%, year over year.”

A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] 2022 Crime Statistics are now available to the public.

“The figures show there were 2,902 offences in 2022 as compared with 3,165 offences in 2021. That reflects a decrease of 263 or 8.3%, year over year.

“Of note, this also represents the fourth consecutive yearly decrease from a high of 3,694 offences back in 2018.

“That notwithstanding, crimes against the person were up in 2022. Conversely, there was a decrease in crimes against property.

“Also reflecting decreases were crimes against the community and offences of anti-social behaviour. However, this was due in the main to the existence of COVID regulations.

“The 2022 crime figures reveal there were 9 murders that year.

“Five of these unfortunate incidents were firearms related, three of them involved the use of bladed articles. One person died following a physical assault.

“Crimes against the person increased from 579 in 2021 to 693 in 2022.

“In 2022, there were 11 road traffic fatalities, while 132 people were seriously injured in road traffic collisions. The vast majority of traffic collisions on our roads are due to impaired driving and speed. While the BPS is working assiduously to address the incidence of road traffic collisions, as evidenced by the 9,233 traffic tickets issued in 2022, the public must do its part by exercising greater caution when operating a vehicle and not engaging in driving whilst impaired.”

Addressing the 2022 crime statistics, Darrin Simons, Commissioner of Police stated, “While there have been increases in some categories, the fact remains that overall, crime was down in 2022. Admittedly, COVID regulations would have had an influence on the figures.”

“However, despite the challenges highlighted here, your Bermuda Police Service continues its efforts, unabated, to maintain this downward trend. We may not get it right all the time, but we seek to ensure that we do get it right the majority of the time.”

“What will aid in making that effort successful is your continued support. We thank the public for continuing to hold us accountable, as we perform our duties in meeting our mandate of making Bermuda safer.”

“As I have often said, the community is the police and the police is the community. It is through this partnership that we will continue to ensure Bermuda’s reputation as a safe jurisdiction.”

A police spokesperson added, “The BPS 2022 Crime Statistics can now be viewed on our website: https://www.bermudapolice.bm”

Interesting. Are these statistics generated from the same police reporting system that cannot find the report I filed by searching on my last name?

  2. Fewer people says:

No Brownie points here as we are plastered with huge posters which are illegal and nothing is done. Bikes overtaking like crazy in dangerous situations and folks riding loud bikes and driving black tinted cars all say the police are hopeless. Or they are trying to show they are 100 officers short. It starts small and grows and now they can’t contain it .

  3. sage says:

2022? It takes 2 plus years to compile these stats? Also was there ever a year crime went up?

  4. Joe Bloggs says:

“While the BPS is working assiduously to address the incidence of road traffic collisions”

You could start by enforcing the Road Traffic Act!

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

Are these solved crimes that have gone to court, reported crimes with nobody held accountable or how about crimes where people simply don’t bother reporting?

  6. Hilarious says:

What would happen to the Chief Financial Officer if a public company took TWO YEARS to produce its annual report? What about the Chief Executive Officer/President?Seriously. TWO YEARS to produce an annual report!!! How is that even acceptable? Oh, wait, this is Bermuda.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Sad state of affairs.A bank can give you your balances instantly but the BPS, and every other Government department is years behind in producing statistics.

what is difficult to accept is its 2 years old surely this information is available sooner. Surely its better to have a report that is 90% correct on a timely basis so that adjustments can be put in place then wait 2+ years and comment on them. The horse has long bolted from the stable if the results went spiraling out of control. No doubt difficult job and i appreciate what you do , but we see daily the total disregard for Rules and laws the penalty does not cause any to think twice
time to make it hurt when laws are broken

    • Hilarious says:

I heard crime data is from the multi-million dollar police computer & software reporting system. Somehow, standard reporting functionality is lacking at the push of a button to produce pre-defined reports.

No doubt, a consultant had to be brought in to extract the data for the reports.

  8. Hilarious says:

Two years of preparing and this disclaimer!!!

“While every effort is made to ensure that the information contained in this report is accurate, the BPS makes no warranty, representation or guarantee as to the content, sequence, accuracy, timeliness or completeness of any data or information provided. In other words, the report is not worth the PDF file output.

  9. Ringmaster says:

Totally meaningless. The BPS is short staffed, so has that been factored in? Less boots on the ground has to mean less crime reported. Ever tried to report a “crime”? No interest, but a push back to prevent a file/paperwork trail.
