The Bermuda Zoological Society kicks off its 2025 Lecture Series on January 28 with horticulturalist Chris Collins presenting on sustainable gardening.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] is kicking off its 2025 Lecture Series with an informative talk on sustainable gardening. In partnership with The Bermuda Botanical Society [BBS], attendees will gain the knowledge to more efficiently master organic gardening from UK Horticulturalist Chris Collins, director of CM Collins Horticultural Ltd. [D.H.E. Msc Dip [Tokyo]. FCIHort. FCGI] and Head of Horticulture at Garden Organic UK charity.

“From composting techniques, seed saving of local varieties and use of natural resources the talk will give practical tips to show how horticulture provides all our essential requirements and how the practice of resourceful gardening is set to play an important role in sustainability, particularly as our planet’s resources become more limited.

“Mr Collins trained and worked at Edinburgh, Kew and Limbe Botanic Gardens as well as working as head gardener at Westminster Abbey. He is a specialist in amenity horticulture, park management, garden design and maintenance, biodiverse and organic methods, soft landscaping and planting plans including school garden design, and is a popular community, school and professional workshop presenter, who featured as the Gardener on the popular UK children’s television show Blue Peter for 10 years.

“Presenting techniques from his 40 years of horticultural experience, as well as strategies gained from his own “humble” allotment, attendees will walk away with greater knowledge to grow an organic garden and the enthusiasm and enjoyment of working with soil.”

Jennifer Flood, BBS President, said, “The Bermuda Botanical Society emphasises the study and promotion of the botanical sciences and is working hard to raise awareness about the critical role that plants play in our lives as well as the importance of endemic and native species to supporting our native fauna. Our island is under stress from invasives that alter our ecosystem. The BBS encourages the community to get out and enjoy the benefits of gardening and its importance, not only for our environment, but also the benefits to emotional and physical health.”

The spokesperson said, “Research has shown that spending time in the outdoors tending a garden is a highly rewarding and beneficial activity for both children and adults, including reduced stress levels, improved mood and increased physical activity as well as a greater connection to nature which in turn builds an appreciation for our island environments.
