FDM Introduces Energy & Environmental Policy
The Free Democratic Movement [FDM] introduced its Energy and Environmental Policy, which they said is a “comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring affordable energy solutions and strong environmental protections for Bermuda.”
A spokesperson said, “Our policy is built on pragmatic solutions that balance economic efficiency with sustainability, addressing key concerns such as energy costs, waste management, and land preservation.
The FDM said, “Key Highlights:
- Transition to LNG [Liquefied Natural Gas]: We will phase out the use of heavy fuel oil at BELCO’s North Power Station in favor of LNG, a cleaner and more cost-effective energy source that will stabilize electricity prices and improve air quality.
- Better Waste Management Practices: Enhancing Bermuda’s recycling system and increasing the frequency of waste collection will improve efficiency at Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy Facility while reducing illegal dumping and rodent infestations. We are also committed to reducing the use of the airport dump, which remains an environmental hazard and an eyesore for arriving tourists.
- Permanent Protection of Agricultural Reserve Land: FDM is committed to ensuring long-term food security by preserving Bermuda’s Agricultural Reserve land, encouraging local food production, and supporting self-regulation within the farming industry.
- Supporting Seniors with Fresh Produce & Seedlings: As part of our commitment to food security, we will donate government-grown food crops and starter seedlings to seniors, ensuring access to fresh, healthy food while promoting sustainable agriculture.
- Planting More Mangroves to Slow Coastal Erosion: Recognizing the importance of protecting our coastlines, FDM will launch a national mangrove planting initiative to combat erosion and enhance carbon sequestration, ensuring the resilience of Bermuda’s coastal ecosystems.
“Bermuda must implement policies that protect our unique ecosystem from harm—whether caused by local mismanagement or external factors. Our approach provides practical, achievable solutions to safeguard our environment while ensuring energy security and economic prosperity.”
