Sienna Mosquera is set to continue her golf journey at the collegiate level, having committed to play for the Lehigh University women’s team in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Mosquera, who plans to major in biology, will join her new team-mates in August as part of the NCAA Division I Patriot League.

She will compete against rivals such as Lafayette College, Boston University, Army West Point, and Bucknell University.

Leah Mosquera, Sienna’s mother, expressed immense pride in her daughter’s achievement and noted her confidence in Sienna’s ability to reach this milestone.

“The NCAA has had a major shift to where they have imposed roster limits across all sports, so it’s challenging to get a roster spot as golf teams will now be capped at nine players,” Leah told Bernews.

“As a female athlete coming into this sport later than most juniors who go on to play college golf, she has made this happen with resilience and grit.

“She’s trying to set herself up for a successful future in golf. Committing her next four years playing D1 will open the door to even greater invaluable experiences as a university student-athlete.”

Leah added that Sienna’s practical mindset and determination were key to her success.

“She’s practical about her choices and had never swayed from the idea of questioning whether she could end up playing for a D1 golf team,” Leah said.

“She has done everything she needs to do to make things happen.

“I’ve never had to tell her to go to practice – from day one, it has been her in the driver’s seat of her journey. My husband and I, along with our other two children, have worked together to give her the support and encouragement along the way.”

Sienna’s journey has been shaped by several influential mentors and coaches who helped her develop her skills and mental approach to the game. She is currently a student at the Mike Bender Golf Academy in Lake Mary, Orlando.

“She’s had strong influences and coaching early on from Kim Swan and Dom Azzopardi [PGA player Lucas Herbert’s coach],” Leah said.

“She met Dom while volunteering at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in 2022.

“Through small talk about her dreams and aspirations, Dom showed keen interest in teaching her more about the game, providing mental Zoom sessions for nearly a year.”

Local figures such as Camiko Smith and Michael Sims, along with support from Port Royal Golf Course, Belmont Golf Course, and the Bermuda Golf Association, also played significant roles in her development.
