[Updated] The Progressive Labour Party is holding a press conference this morning [Jan 22] to announce a candidate for Constituency #23 Paget West in the upcoming general election. We will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video is below.

Update: Kim Wilkerson will be the PLP candidate in C23 Paget West. The incumbent is OBA leader Jarion Richardson

Statement from Kim Wilkerson:

It is my distinct pleasure and honor this morning to announce my decision to stand as the Progressive Labour Party Candidate for constituency 23.

I bring to this fight the experience I already have in public service, and in life, and I plan to bring the same independent mind, critical thinking and problem solving skills to the issues faced by the residents of C 23.

My passion is to fight for human rights and to see more humanity in the way that we operate as a country, and how we connect, one citizen to another.

It has been an honor to serve Bermuda as your Attorney General and Minister of Justice over the past few months and in that time we have continued the work of making our laws fairer and more reflective of the needs of Bermudians today and a Bermuda of the future.

I hope to continue the plans already in train in my role at the Ministry of Justice and to fight singularly for the people of C 23 by listening to understand their specific needs and advocating for them as they relate to the national landscape to ensure that those concerns translate to policy and action. I promise to be accessible and accountable but more important than that, I promise to DO. I will be a changemaker for C23 and for Bermuda.

Statement from Premier David Burt:

Today, we gather to continue a tradition that defines the Progressive Labour Party: a thoughtful, transparent, and meaningful introduction of the candidates who we believe will proudly and effectively represent their constituents. Each rollout is an opportunity to share not just names but the heart, vision, and qualifications of those who step forward to serve.

Just yesterday, we held a press conference focused on what Bermudians are truly concerned about: the cost of living. We outlined not only what we have done—reducing taxes for 86% of workers and all businesses, eliminating duty on essential goods, reducing energy taxes by 60%, and expanding and increasing childcare assistance—but also what we plan to do next.

And as the leader of the Progressive Labour Party, I am happy to give you again five things that the next Progressive Labour Party Government will do that we spoke about yesterday:

  • The next PLP Government will foster competition and explore innovative ways to deliver affordable food options directly to Bermudians, ensuring real relief for food.
  • The next PLP Government will reduce energy taxes by at least an additional 20% in the next budget, bringing total reductions in Government energy taxes to 80%.
  • The next PLP Government will establish Bermuda’s first seniors’ daycare facility, offering meals, activities, and support for families that are a part of the sandwich generation, balancing care for children and ageing parents.
  • The next PLP Government will introduce a free primary care visit annually for HIP members and a specialist visit for FutureCare members, reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for Bermudians.
  • The next PLP Government will continue to reduce payroll taxes for workers and to ensure the burden of taxation on workers continues to fall.

And it will not be just these five things. On 6 February, we will unveil a platform designed to lift every Bermudian. That’s the difference between the PLP and the OBA. While they deliver vague promises, we provide clear plans, and we will deliver on them as we have done before. Today, I am happy to have you all here as the Progressive Labour Party introduces a candidate whose career, character, and life story epitomise our party’s values of fairness and service and reflect the aspirations of the people of Bermuda. I am honoured to announce that Attorney General Ms Kim Wilkerson will be the Progressive Labour Party candidate for Constituency 23 Paget West against the Opposition Leader in the upcoming election.

Kim Wilkerson is not just an accomplished professional; she is a testament to what hard work, dedication, and resilience can achieve. A proud product of the Bermuda public education system, Kim attended Paget Primary, the Berkeley Institute, and Bermuda College before furthering her education abroad, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration, a law degree, and a postgraduate diploma.

She has built an extraordinary career spanning over 35 years in the insurance industry, rising to positions of leadership and influence in Bermuda and globally. Kim’s journey is one of breaking barriers and setting new standards of excellence. As Attorney General, she has carried forward our vision for making Bermuda’s laws fairer for all of us.

In Opposition, she was a trusted voice in the Senate, where her sharp intellect and deep understanding of economic development set her apart as a leader committed to Bermuda’s progress. But what I admire most about our Attorney General is her passion for service. Whether chairing the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority, volunteering with organisations like SHIFT, or mentoring young Bermudians, Kim has shown that her commitment goes beyond titles and offices.

She understands leadership is about lifting others, not standing above them. She embodies the Progressive Labour Party’s vision of building a fairer Bermuda. She knows that fairness means ensuring our children have access to world-class education, that working families can afford to put food on the table, and that our seniors can live out their golden years with dignity.

She knows that fairness means creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, advocating for justice in our court system, rehabilitation for our prisoners and building a safer, stronger Bermuda for every Bermudian. This election is about choosing the future we want for Bermuda. Kim Wilkerson is the kind of leader who understands that progress towards a fairer Bermuda for all of us is not inevitable – it’s something we have to fight for, something we have to work for, and something we have to deliver together. Kim will bring her vision, experience, and unwavering commitment to the people of Constituency 23.

And I have no doubt that she will not only meet but exceed the high standards this community deserves. So, PLP family, I ask you to join me in supporting Kim Wilkerson as the PLP candidate for Constituency 23.

All the Bob Marley quotes and so called consultation with humanity is all for naught when you have a full slate of parliamentary colleagues who haven’t listened.Like Mischa Fubler, your words and intent do not match the party’s trajectory.

  2. watching says:

Kim Wilkerson is immensely qualified. I would love to see her in the House. This is a tough seat but voters in C23 should know she is the better option.
Her views on justice reform are progressive and humanistic and with her at the helm I can only see great things.

The OBA Leader could actually be in trouble especially with the lack of confidence being shown to him by his counterparts.

    • iyiyi says:

If Kim is truly qualified then she should be running as an independent where her skills can make a difference . Under the PLP government she will just be another minion following the leader .

    • Jus' Wonderin' says:

There really is only one way to be progressive and humanistic for justice reform so that’s not very special, especially as a human being. All people would lean this route!

Your final sentence is silly as it’s just your opinion and made up without facts.

  3. Joe Bloggs says:

The Leader of the Opposition versus the Attorney-General. This should be fun.

    • Ah. An easy one says:

He has more crayons than she does so he will win. My prediction. Feb. 19th i’ll win big big money when he wins. If I,lose, its back to Adventureland.
