All this talk about seniors this and seniors that, but why is nobody talking about the youth of Bermuda the PLP grossly disenfranchises? The youth’s vote and right to determine their future is repeatedly cast aside by the PLP through repeatedly calling elections whilst a significant portion of the youth population is abroad.
It is ultimately the future generations that will bear the consequences and costs that this government thrusts upon them by wilfully neglecting their voices. This tone-deaf and arrogant electioneering for short term gain for the PLP, rather than for long-term security for the youth of Bermuda, and all seniors for that matter.
Also some of the points being made here are baffling, bordering on the point of comedy when taken into proper context:
“Since we took office, we’ve raised pensions for seniors every single year.”
This has almost entirely been offset by increased inflation, increased food prices (cough cough Sugar Tax…) economy shrinking due to emigration of Bermudians to the UK and elsewhere, thereby shrinking pension contributions in the future, which will hurt us further down the line. This is not sustainable, and should not be celebrated as it creates more problems in the future than it currently solves.
“This government believes that when we are in the position to provide relief. We will provide that relief.”
This is perhaps the biggest joke and insult to Bermuda collectively in this press conference. When has this government ever been in a position to provide genuine relief since they took office? Our +$3.5 billion public debt has only grown, our infrastructure is crumbling, thousands of Bermudians have emigrated elsewhere due to unsustainable living costs – all under their watch. It doesn’t add up.
But yes, I’m sure the seniors are elated that their increased pensions afford them less and less with each passing year…
You have to ask yourself the following:
Why does the current Government ruling party need to spam Social media , the internet via adverts (with untruths), roadsides with banners (with untruths) and the media with so many videos and announcements? If they had been doing a good job, then they would not need to try and convince, manipulate, propaganda spam the voters. Clearly their crazy levels of spamming behaviour is evidence (and a whole lot of it) that they are NOT the best choice, if they were the best choice, then their record would support their re-election, but it doesn’t
Clearly all these crazy scale actions of the PLP are a RED FLAG. Have the PLP manipulated you, did you fall for it?
Increasing the Pension each year is expected of every government. The UK increase the State Pension every year.
This is one of the jobs of government to keep up with the cost of living. Burt keeps repeating Pension increases as if it’s a gift from his Party. Pensions, Housing, Healthcare, Cost of Living, DO YOUR JOB!!!
Yet the OBA didn’t do it at all during their years in power until the last year when they knew an election was due.
There was no money when the OBA came into power. The PLP had spent it all. If there was money they would have raised pension. Stop being so deceptive.
Get real Watching.
The OBA undertook austerity measures to stop the haemorrhaging of our economy that went off the rails between 1998-2013 thanks to the PLP. That is not a sleight to seniors, it is responsible fiscal management.
Even if they did raise pensions every year during their tenure, they’d be chastised for our public debt increasing without securing the funds with which to award those increases.
And if we only had pennies for every time the PLP promised they would do something they hadn’t done in the lead up to an election… our public debt would be erased and seniors pensions would grow tenfold… LOL
Yet they found the money for America’s Cup.
Which was verified by independently by PWC to have:
- Injected $336.4 million into our economy directly as a result of having hosted the event. Not including legacy and future impact)
- Gave 14 local businesses and their employees opportunities to work with the event.
- Brought in excess of 10K visitors to the island who stated they came for the America’s Cup as the purpose of their visit.
- Provided learning / recreation opportunities to over 5000 students in Bermuda through America’s Cup Endeavour Programme.
Just a few examples for you, by all accounts a net positive investment for Bermuda. All of this info is in the public domain and easily found via a simple Google Search.
Ironic that the PLP diehards decry the Americas Cup despite all of the positives it brought to Bermudians along with it. Notwithstanding that Burt and a fair number of other PLP MPs were in attendance of the event on more than one occasion… but just a boat race, right?
Also during the same few years of their total governance the PLP increased the pension, they also saw rises in future care costs and food cost, so Pensioners actually lost out.
I haven’t seen you Mr. Tyrell?
Enough! Go away! we dont want you! youve run this country into the ground! Who in their right mind would ever vote for any of you!
They are trumpeting this Senior pay raise achievement but ask this if this government also wants to take credit for setting the minimum living wage at $16 an hour thats 2560 a month yet seniors are expected to live on 1800 guess thats taking care of our Seniors. They pay lip service to everyone expecting that to be enough to get the vote . $ 3.5 billion + in debt belongs to the plp and unfortunately each and every one of us is responsible for it
Stop the nonsense
Time to Go
Time to Go
I don’t recall the PLP increasing pensions every year since 1998. I do recall times when they increased pensions, only to increase the future care premiums by more so pensioners actually received less.
How’s that “affordable housing” project known as Grand Atlantic doing? Still consuming millions of dollars? $125 million plus and no income, yet the PLP love to criticize the airport that was needed and costs nothing (except when the PLP closes down the island). How much is the secret deal Acute Care Wing that is not fit for its purpose costing taxpayers?
You had better refresh your math on the cost of that great folly on the south shore.
You don’t think all of that money that has been thrown at that ugly monstrousity has been aquired without cost do you? When was the last time you got a loan without costs?
Factor in all of the finance costs that eyesore has gennerated over the years, without any income save for a little thanks to the OBA and the America’s Cup housing the French team.
I would not be surprised if the actual cost is more like $180M. Add it to the long list of PLP failures creating a debt, that costs us hundreds of thousands per DAY.
“You had better refresh your math”
Lt. Col. Burch has acknowledged $100 MILLION in capital expenditure on construction of the White Elephant. He has not addressed interest, maintenance costs, borrowing costs, or other costs.
Who does Burt and his PLP cohorts think that they are fooling? Enough obviously.
He talks of pension increases as if they are some free money when the increases don’t even keep up with inflation. How much will he and the MPs voted for themselves in pay increase? 18% is it? More when you factor in the new cars and other perks that go with the position.
He has just announced the conversion of a surplus school campus into a senior daycare center. Big Whoop! The boom in senior numbers has been known for decades. The decline in demand for public schools has been going on for decades. Preparation for the retirement and the ageing needs of these seniors has been known for decades. The PLP has been in power for decades.
Has the PLP Government done anything to prepare for this boom in senior needs? No. Absolutely nothing. Here we are, weeks before an election, and Burt and the PLP trot out this grand announcement that one school, just one, is to be converted into use for a seniors daycare. Wait for it. Half of these seniors will be dead before the doors open.
Another PLP fail. Another example of the inability of the PLP to plan for and be ready for the future.
