Gherdai Hassell’s Art Showcased In Belgium
The Bermuda Government’s Brussels Office is supporting Bermudian artist Gherdai Hassell as she showcases her work in the ‘When We See Us’ exhibition at the Bozar Center for Fine Arts in Belgium.
A spokesperson said, “Internationally acclaimed Bermudian artist Gherdai Hassell opens at the highly anticipated When We See Us traveling exhibition, opening at Bozar Center for Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium.
“The exhibition, which celebrates the richness and diversity of Black artistic expression in painting across the diaspora, will feature Hassell’s thought-provoking piece alongside works by other leading contemporary artists from the African diaspora. This exhibition is conceived and organised by Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa [MOCAA] in Cape Town and is presented at Bozar under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen.
“Hassell, known for her vibrant mixed-media collages and explorations of identity, memory, and heritage, has gained global recognition for her unique artistic voice. Her inclusion in When We See Us underscores her growing influence in the international art world and highlights Bermuda’s thriving creative community.
“The When We See Us exhibition, curated by Koyo Kouoh and Tandazani Dhlakama, is a groundbreaking showcase that examines themes of Black joy, resilience, and self-representation. Hassell’s work, which often draws inspiration from her Bermudian roots, adds a distinctive perspective to the exhibition, offering audiences a glimpse into the cultural and historical narratives of the island.
“The Bermuda government’s Brussels Office has thrown its full support behind Hassell’s participation in the exhibition. Aliyyah Ahad and Nahje’ Smith attended the opening of 500+ visitors in support of Hassell.”
Ms. Ahad, the Bermuda Government’s Head of European Affairs and Policy, said, “Gherdai Hassell is a shining example of Bermuda’s creative excellence. Her work not only resonates with audiences worldwide, but also serves as a powerful reminder of the rich cultural heritage we share as Bermudians.
