BUEI To Feature Screening Of ‘Outcasted’
The local premier of ‘Outcasted’, a short film by Bermudian Kayode George, will be shown at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] at 7pm on Wednesday February 26th during the finale of BUEI’s Black Film Experience.
A spokesperson said, “The experience has been celebrating Black History Month by showcasing films by emerging Black director, actors and screen writers.
“BUEI is honoured and excited to host the local debut of ‘Outcasted’ for its first showing in Bermuda. Ms. George will introduce her film to the audience and highlight important themes presented in the 13-minute narrative film, which she wrote and directed.
“‘Outcasted’ takes viewers on a journey that explores various challenges faced by a dark-skinned actress in the film industry. The film has already garnered attention at several Canadian and American film festivals, and this screening marks its debut on Kayode’s home soil.”
Ms. George shared, “Last year, I had the whirlwind experience of creating ‘Outcasted’ for my thesis project at Toronto Metropolitan University, after doubting whether I had the confidence to write and direct my own film. However, when I realized that none of the other films in my cohort had Black characters in them, let alone Black female leads, I felt responsible to take on the challenge and do it myself. Fortunately, the film earned me the Achievement in Screenwriting Award at our university’s film festival, and it has been selected for various Canadian and international festivals since.”
A spokesperson added, “‘Outcasted’ will be screened before the finale film of BUEI’s Black Film Experience featuring the 2024 drama ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’. This feature film follows a Black artist whose path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. Together, they struggle and learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving.
