The City of Hamilton announced that planned improvement works will commence today [Feb 6] to further enhance the area surrounding the iconic Bermuda Marquee Sign.

A spokesperson said, “The City of Hamilton is pleased to announce that planned improvement works will commence on February 6, 2025, to further enhance the area surrounding the iconic Bermuda Marquee Sign, a beloved landmark and now one of the most photographed spots in the City.

“This paving and beautification project will create a more vibrant and inviting atmosphere, ensuring that the Bermuda Marquee Sign continues to be a world-class photo opportunity for both visitors and locals. The work will include:

  • Installation of Stone-Crete pavers to replace the existing slab, elevating the aesthetic appeal of the space.
  • Enhanced drainage systems to prevent water pooling after heavy rains, making the area more accessible year-round.
  • New tree plantings to provide additional shade and enhance the natural beauty of the waterfront.

“As part of this project, the bike parking bays in this area of Front Street will be temporarily inaccessible beginning February 6, to ensure public safety during construction. Alternate bike parking will be provided in the neighbouring Number 1 car park. The paving works, which will be carried out by Brown & Company landscapers, are expected to take approximately 9–10 weeks to complete.

“Since its installation in 2023 as part of the VIVID: Public Art Initiative, the Bermuda Marquee Sign has become a highlight of Hamilton’s waterfront, drawing visitors eager to capture a piece of Bermuda’s unique charm. A must-do for anyone exploring the City, this final phase of improvements will ensure the space around the sign is just as spectacular as the artwork itself.

“The paving and drainage upgrades had been factored into the original design of the Bermuda Marquee Sign. However, the project was rescheduled to accommodate new legislation requiring a revised stormwater system design. The updated paving will now not only meet new regulations but will also allow for potential future expansions, including a possible harbourfront boardwalk connection.

“The 2,356 sq. ft. area will be carefully transformed, with the existing lighting—installed in anticipation of this upgrade—already in place to illuminate the sign beautifully at night.

“The Bermuda Marquee Sign was conceptualized in 2019 and brought to life through an island-wide graphic design contest in 2021. The winning design, created by Bermudian artist Keeon Minors of Lead x Design, was selected from over graphic design 60 entries for its vibrant depiction of Bermuda’s landscapes, flora, fauna, and architecture.”

City of Hamilton Director of Marketing & Communications, Jessica Astwood, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “The City recognizes that artistic and cultural infrastructure is vital for cultivating vibrancy within our community. The Bermuda marquee sign was conceptualized to honor Bermuda’s rich culture and heritage while instilling a sense of pride among residents. The upcoming paving and landscaping enhancements will further enhance this iconic site, establishing it as a premier destination for both visitors and locals.”

The spokesperson said, “The City of Hamilton appreciates the public’s patience as we complete this project and looks forward to unveiling a fully enhanced waterfront space that will continue to showcase Bermuda at its best.

“Additionally, the public is advised that in the same area of Front Street, the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] will begin dismantling the container building starting February 14, 2025. Once cleared, the site will be returned to the City of Hamilton and repurposed as a public amenity space, further enhancing the waterfront area. This project will also require restricted public access to certain areas for safety purposes, inclusive of bike parking bays.

“The City appreciates the public’s patience as we work to improve this vibrant part of Hamilton.”
