Column: Dr Watkins On American Heart Month
[Column written by Dr Kimberley Watkins]
February marks American Heart Month, an important reminder for everyone to focus on their heart health. In Bermuda, ischemic heart disease is the second leading cause of death, and cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to disability, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and action regarding cardiovascular health.
The month aims to increase awareness by getting us to think about how small changes can keep our hearts healthy. Each week this month, we will highlight a different aspect of heart health, starting with the importance of physical activity.
Regular exercise strengthens the heart, improves its efficiency, and supports overall cardiovascular health. You do not need to spend all day in the gym; even a 5-minute dance break or workout can be beneficial. Want to spice up your routine? Here are some ideas: take a stroll during lunch [to find a new coffee shop or explore some of the local parks], channel your inner mountain goat by conquering the stairs instead of the lift, or park far away like you’re dodging that person you don’t want to see!
Forget intense marathon training—start small! Engage in playful activities like cleaning with a purpose, putting on your favourite song and having a dance-off, or turning playtime with kids or pets into mini-Olympics. Every bit of movement matters, and it can be fun too.
For those new to exercising or with health concerns, begin slowly and gradually increase intensity. Consider consulting a healthcare professional to help create a personalized plan that prioritizes cardiovascular health, strength, balance, and flexibility. Incorporate movement into your day—after meetings, during TV commercials, or while waiting for the kettle to boil. Your healthcare provider can help set achievable fitness goals to keep you on track and motivated.
Staying active supports weight management and regulates blood pressure and cholesterol, which are vital for your heart health. Find enjoyable activities for you, whether cycling, swimming, or dancing, and consider joining friends or family for motivation. Explore community classes [tai chi, line dancing, salsa, or even chair yoga], join a walking group exploring the island or start fitness challenges at work to enhance physical health and build social connections.
This February, in honour of Heart Month, let’s dedicate this week to staying active and boosting our physical activity together. Remember, even small changes can lead to significant improvements; every step truly counts. There is something for everyone, whether you’re just starting your exercise journey or aiming to enhance your current routine. Let’s work together in our commitment to heart health towards a brighter future here in Bermuda.
