NMB To Host Free Community Day On Feb 23
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] will be hosting a free Community Day on Sunday [Feb 23] sponsored by RenaissanceRe and Butterfield.
A spokesperson said, “There will be food vendors, door prizes and a multitude of free hands-on activities for all ages so that everyone can engage with the Museum and dive deeper into Bermuda history and culture. The Community Day is part of Free for February which allows all residents free admission to the Museum during the entire month of February, also sponsored by RenaissanceRe and Butterfield.
“At NMB we strive to be an essential community education resource and hope that everyone will take advantage of the free fun day planned at NMB for our Community Day, which is made possible thanks to our sponsors, vendors, and community partners. We look forward to welcoming you to Dockyard this weekend!”
“Community Day activities will run from 10am to 3pm and the Museum will be open for free for everyone [residents and visitors] all day, 9:30am to 5pm. Yoga teacher Lisa Wingood will start the day with a yoga-inspired breathing and movement class open to all ages and abilities, which will be followed by an opening dance by the St. David’s Indigenous Society at 10:30am. Throughout the day, there will be interactive art activities with local artist Shana Hollis and arts educator Jake Commandeur, as well corn husk doll making with the St. David’s Indigenous Society.
“Talks with artists and local experts will be held including a Friendly Societies object talk with Dr. Michael Bradshaw and photojournalist documentarian, Nicola Muirhead who will explore objects from the Friendly Society collections held at the National Museum of Bermuda. Local artist John Gardner will share his creative process of NMB’s newest exhibition STONE: From Bermuda to Charleston on display at Commissioner’ House. He has teamed up with Lawrence Mills who will share his knowledge of local masonry and Bermuda vernacular architecture. Artist Graham Foster will conduct a tour and Q&A of the Hall of History mural. Bermuda Is Love will hold a fireside chat with Second World War veteran Peter Brown and the NMB curatorial team are available for Q&A, and can provide information on NMB projects like Bermuda Family Scrapbook.
“Other entertainment includes lunch time family-friendly music performance by local musician Rivah, cannon firings, two Dolphin Quest demos, and a performance by the Warwick Gombeys which will close the Community Day with a festive air in the Keep Yard at 3pm.
“All day activities include games in the Keep Yard, family scavenger hunts which can be picked up at the Community Day welcome tables.
“Butterfield & Vallis are kindly providing free beverages and FourWays are generously providing free beef and vegetarian chili stations in Commissioner’s House. Dockyard Brewing will be pouring free samples of their local craft beers in the Keep Yard and providing free coffee for those that arrive before 11am. Other vendors will be in the Keep Yard include Top Dog, T’s Homestyle, and Ashley’s Lemonade with food and drinks for sale. It is recommended that you bring cash and card for purchases. Door prizes include Market Place gift cards, NMB memberships and publications.
