NMB Offers Free Admission In February

January 28, 2021

The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] is opening its doors for free to all Bermuda residents during the month of February for the eighth year.

“NMB is a collective voice for and about Bermuda. Through collections, exhibits, and programmes, the Museum offers insights into contemporary issues and is one of the Island’s leading educational resources sharing Bermuda’s diverse history, culture and heritage. NMB promotes history and culture as part of what helps to keep communities together and makes them stronger,” a spokesperson said.

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, NMB has decided not to do group programmes – last year’s programmes included photography, book readings and learning traditional weaving – but have instead developed a series of activity guides for small groups and family bubbles: Museum Detectives. The activity booklets will include close-looking, critical thinking and reflection activities and will be accessible and fun for all.

“The first activity booklet of the series, Piloting in Bermuda, is now live on the NMB website. NMB Director of Learning & Engagement Lisa Howie said: “Pack a picnic and take a trip west to explore NMB in a new way! In Piloting in Bermuda, you will learn about reefs, channels, and how to avoid being shipwrecked. Discover the necessary work of a pilot and the gigs he operated. Explore innovations in ship design and the critical role of lighthouses. Plus, gain an understanding of why it is important to recognize the courageous works of Bermuda’s pilots.” Download the activity here or print out a copy to bring on your visit.

“With over 80,000 artifacts in its collection, the Museum’s exhibits cover a range of diverse topics including Bermuda’s cultural links with the West Indies and Azores, trans-Atlantic slavery and slavery in Bermuda, Bermuda’s defence heritage, shipwrecks and early Bermuda settlement, the building of Dockyard and much more. NMB’s 16-acre property also contains jaw-dropping views, massive cannon, local watercraft, a stunning mural and a children’s playground.

“Upon entry during the month of February, Bermuda residents can enter a weekly raffle to win a free family membership. NMB member benefits include: unlimited free admission, discounted guest rates, the popular magazine MARITimes, 10% discount on all NMB publications, access to genealogy research, invitations to special events, savings at participating Dockyard restaurants and Dolphin Quest, and reciprocal membership to maritime museums affiliated with the International Congress of Maritime Museums.

“To take advantage of Free for February, Bermuda residents should bring proof of residency such as driver’s license or utility bill.

“NMB is open every day 10am – 5pm [last admission 4pm]. Visit here for more information, including COVID visitor guidelines.”
