Roche Celebrates 30 Years With Bermuda College
Roche Bermuda marks 30 years of partnership with Bermuda College by introducing a $30,000 scholarship program and new internship opportunities for top science graduates.
A spokesperson said, “Roche Bermuda is proud to commemorate three decades of partnership with Bermuda College as the institution celebrates its 50th anniversary. In conjunction with Science Week 2025, Roche is deepening its commitment to advancing local scientific education by introducing a $30,000 scholarship program and new internship opportunities for top science graduates embarking on science studies overseas.”
Ms. LaRondie Harrell, President of Roche Bermuda, announced that three outstanding science graduates from Bermuda College will each receive a $10,000 scholarship at the close of the academic year. “At Roche, we believe that innovation starts with education. Supporting the next generation of Bermuda’s scientists is vital to our mission of driving progress in science and medicine,” said Ms. Harrell. “These scholarships will provide students with the necessary resources to excel and make lasting contributions to the field.”
Additionally, Roche has partnered with Dr. Carika Weldon, Founder of CariGenetics, to introduce a new paid internship program for a Bermuda College student in the 2025/2026 school year. The internship will provide hands-on experience in the fields of genetics and biomedical research. “Support from corporate partners like Roche is integral to shaping the future of science in Bermuda,” Dr. Weldon stated. “These internships offer students invaluable exposure to cutting-edge research and will help cultivate a new generation of skilled professionals.”
The spokesperson said, “Using the Roche Science Lab, CariGenetics successfully conducted Bermuda’s first local genetic study on breast cancer, improving testing efficiency and security, reducing the island’s reliance on overseas laboratories, and creating local job opportunities in the burgeoning field of genetic research. CariGenetics has now been able to establish their own state-of-the-art research labs at Bermuda College that will now benefit students and staff alike.
“Since the inception of the science labs in 1995, spearheaded by Sir John Swan, Roche Bermuda has played a pivotal role in strengthening Bermuda College’s science programs by funding laboratory upgrades, providing research opportunities, and awarding scholarships. Dr. David Sam, President of Bermuda College, expressed his gratitude for Roche’s unwavering support, describing the partnership as “a powerful collaboration founded on shared values and a commitment to excellence.”
“Science Week 2025 promises to be an exciting showcase of scientific innovation, with lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions designed to engage students, faculty, and the wider community in conversations about the latest scientific advancements and career opportunities in the field.”
