Carifta Games: Selection & Expectations
BNAA President Dr. Freddie Evans clarified that meeting the Carifta qualification standard is just the first step, and “as per Carifta regulations, only two athletes per event, per age group, can be selected, making the competition for spots highly competitive.”
BNAA President Dr Freddie Evans, “As you all know, it is Carifta time—a period of excitement and dedication for our athletes, coaches, and supporters. Meeting the standard for an event is a commendable achievement and reflects the hard work, discipline, and commitment of our athletes. However, achieving the standard is just the first step in the selection process.
“Athletes who meet the qualification standards must consistently demonstrate dedication, determination, and discipline in their training and competitive performances. The final selection of the Bermuda Carifta team will be made by the coaches and the Board after careful evaluation of all results and other relevant factors.
“While local media has celebrated athletes who have met the standard, it is important to clarify that this does not equate to automatic selection for the Carifta team. I acknowledge that I, too, have been eager in celebrating these accomplishments, but the official team has yet to be determined.
“Additionally, while wind gauges are not applied in certain events, athletes who have achieved a qualifying standard under apparent wind-assisted conditions must further demonstrate consistency and commitment before being considered for final selection. Furthermore, as per Carifta regulations, only two athletes per event, per age group, can be selected, making the competition for spots highly competitive.
“We encourage as many Bermudian supporters as possible to attend the Carifta Games in Trinidad. However, to prevent any disappointment, we strongly advise families to wait until the official team is announced before making travel arrangements.
“Athletes who achieve the qualifying standards will continue to be acknowledged as they reach these milestones. However, we kindly ask parents and affiliates to refrain from deliberating on results or athlete performances, as the selection process will be conducted with fairness, transparency, and the best interests of the athletes in mind.
“Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Bermuda athletics. Let’s continue to uplift and encourage our athletes on their journey to excellence.”
