Field Hockey: Hurricanes & Budgies Win

A day of action in the Bermuda field hockey league saw the Hurricanes narrowly defeat the Swizzles, while the Budgies secured a more comfortable victory over the Griffins.

The Hurricanes raced to a commanding 4-0 lead, but were forced to withstand a spirited Swizzles comeback to emerge victorious.

Mikey Louw opened the scoring for the Hurricanes in the first minute with a well-taken field goal. Makie De Sousa doubled their advantage in the ninth minute, also with a field goal. Hemijah Bean then converted a penalty corner in the 13th minute, giving the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead at the break.

Owen Curley extended the Hurricanes’ lead to 4-0 in the 42nd minute with another penalty corner conversion. However, the Swizzles then launched a remarkable comeback. Rupert Cuddon-Large scored from a penalty corner in the 44th minute, and Xyaire Smith scored from a penalty corner in the 52nd minute. Smith then added a field goal in the 55th minute, reducing the deficit to just one goal. Despite their late surge, the Swizzles ran out of time, allowing the Hurricanes to secure a narrow 4-3 victory.

Budgies 5 Griffins 2

The Budgies secured a more comfortable victory over the Griffins, with a strong second-half performance proving decisive.

The Budgies took an early lead in the eighth minute with a field goal from Georgia Harris. The Griffins equalised in the 20th minute with a field goal from Aaron Lee, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.

The Budgies dominated the second half, scoring four goals in quick succession. Jasmine Patterson scored from a penalty corner in the 40th minute, followed by a field goal from Patterson a minute later. Tse Smith added another field goal in the 43rd minute, and Jazelle Davis scored in the 48th minute, giving the Budgies a 5-1 lead. Issac Davis scored a field goal for the Griffins, but it was too little, too late, as the Budgies secured a 5-2 victory.

Both matches showcased the competitive spirit and attacking flair of the Bermuda field hockey league, providing an entertaining evening for spectators.
