Cal Simons has hailed the success of the recent Skyport Magic Mile, powered by the Pacers Track Club, held at the Flora Duffy Stadium.

More than 700 boys and girls, aged 4 to 15, took part in the popular annual event, which saw schools competing for cash prizes, courtesy of Skyport. The prizes were awarded to the private and public schools — from pre-school through high school — with the highest participation rates.

Among the winning schools were Southampton Pre-School, Warwick Academy [private primary school category] and Harrington Sound [public primary school category].

In addition to the cash prizes, medals were awarded to the fastest runners in each age group, and trophies were presented to the first-place finishers in every category.

“Everyone had a fun time,” Simons, the Pacers Track Club head coach, told Bernews. “It was a family event. The races were spot on and ran on time.

“We’ve had the post-mortem and we’re looking at ways to make it even better for next year.”

Skyport also awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Maximilian Reid, a 19-year-old college athlete from the Bermuda Pacers Track Club. Reid is studying aviation management at the University of Lynn in Boca Raton, Florida.

The event also featured qualifying races for the 100 and 400 metres, offering athletes the chance to secure a spot at the Carifta Games in Trinidad and Tobago next month.

“A few of the athletes came close to qualifying,” Simons said. “The crowd really pushed them on.”

He added: “I’d like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and Bermuda Timing.”

The Skyport Magic Mile was made possible through the support of Pacers Track Club, Security Associates, Sol Petroleum Bermuda, BermudAir, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice, Butterfield and Vallis, and Barritt’s Ginger Beer.
