Multiplicity Bermuda March 2025

1. Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection – in the Butterfield Gallery and Mezzanine Gallery – May 3 – October 18, 2025

“The Permanent Collection at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art encompasses over 1,600 objects. These works, which range across period, media and style, share a common focus on Bermuda, allowing for a multiplicity of interpretations of the island. Demonstrating the richness of this collection are the ‘collections within the collection’, groupings of artworks by individual artists which manifest their repeated engagement with Bermuda. Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection will shine a light on important groupings within the Permanent Collection, marking a unique opportunity for associated works by individual artists to be displayed and considered as ensembles on the walls of the Butterfield and Mezzanine Galleries.

“Key featured artists include Winslow Homer, Houghton Cranford Smith, May Middleton, Henry Webster Rice, Edwina Sandys, Frank Stella and Jennifer Bartlett. In addition to their extensive representation in the Masterworks Collection, they are also notable for creating art invested in the concepts of process, repetition and seriality. Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection will further explore these topics through the displayed works, encouraging a new perspective on Bermuda, the Masterworks Collection and the nature of art.

2. Janet Fish Solo Exhibition - in the Butterfield Gallery and Mezzanine Gallery – November 15, 2025 – April 18, 2026

“Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is thrilled to announce eminent American painter Janet Fish’s first solo exhibition in the country in which she was raised, Bermuda. This exhibition, which opens to the public on November 15, 2025, is an important survey which will also define Bermuda’s impact on Fish’s life and career.

“Janet Fish’s family have long held ties to Bermuda. Her grandfather, American Impressionist Clark Greenwood Voorhees, was central to an expat American artistic community in Bermuda in the early twentieth century while her mother, painter and sculptor Florence Whistler Fish, also had personal and career ties to the island. Fish thus grew up surrounded not just by the beauty of Bermuda but also the splendour of its art.

“Fish has frequently connected her artistic style and vision to her childhood experiences in Bermuda. Moreover, her enchanting still life paintings, which often include colourful textiles, tropical fruits and flowers and scattered seashells, have tantalising resonances with Bermuda’s unique setting and climate. This exhibition will investigate these connections as well as Fish’s history on the island and the role that the ideas of place, time and personal history hold in her work.
