Students To Perform At World Poetry Day
More than a hundred primary school students will showcase their literary talents today at noon [March 24] in King’s Square, St George’s, as part of UNESCO World Poetry Day 2025.
Students from four schools – St George’s Prep, East End Primary, Francis Patton Primary, and St David’s Primary – will perform original poems inspired by this year’s theme: A Treasure for Tomorrow: Celebrating 25 Years of Our World Heritage Site Status.
Acclaimed local artist June Caisey will also share some of her poetry, offering young poets an inspiring example of artistic expression.
Rennika Denbrook, operations and logistics coordinator for the Corporation of St George’s, said the students had a month to prepare their pieces.
“Some have written individual poems, and some have written them collectively as a class,” Ms Denbrook told Bernews. “We will have a mixture of performances.
“We invite as many people to come down and support the kids as much as possible.
“We have other artists such as June Caisey performing, so the kids have people to look up to. Any sort of inclusion into the arts, I absolutely love.”
Candy-Lee Foggo, town manager, emphasised the significance of Bermuda’s cultural and historical heritage in shaping the event.
“Bermuda has been fortunate to be part of the global family of UNESCO World Heritage Sites,” she said.
“With that international perspective, we join in celebrating the power of poetry in every community.
“The Corporation has made it a priority to include area primary schools, ensuring their participation in a programme that fosters cultural awareness and historical appreciation.
“Through this initiative, students learn about local history, and by presenting their ideas and understanding through public expression, they contribute to a deeper community awareness of different perspectives.”
