9-Year-Old Asks For Donations Not Presents
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Most nine-year-olds dream of birthday parties filled with presents.
But for Kayson Sousa of Smith’s, this year was different.
Instead of asking for toys or games for his ninth birthday in March, Kayson made a heartfelt request: he asked friends and family to donate to the Bermuda SPCA – an animal welfare charity — instead of giving him gifts.
His generosity raised an impressive $1,100, all of which will go towards supporting animals in need at the SPCA’s Paget facility.
Kayson’s mother, Tiffany Sousa, admitted she was caught off guard when her son first shared his idea.
“Out of the blue, Kayson told his grandmother he didn’t want any presents for his birthday and that he just wanted people to donate to the SPCA,” Tiffany told Bernews.
“We didn’t think too much of it, but as we got closer to his birthday and asked Kayson what he wanted, he said, ‘I told you. I wanted people to give money to the SPCA for the dogs.’”
Following Kayson’s wishes, the Sousa family included a special note in his birthday party invitations – a football-themed celebration – encouraging guests to donate to the SPCA instead of bringing a present.
“He didn’t need anything for his birthday as Christmas had just passed. We’re very proud of him,” Tiffany said.
Kayson, a student at Mount Saint Agnes Academy, said his motivation was simple.
“I have a big heart for animals and think they should be treated well,” he said. “I felt very happy to raise so much money for the SPCA.”
After the party, Kayson and his family visited the SPCA to personally deliver the donation. There, he got to see the direct impact of his generosity.
“Kayson got to play with some of the animals,” Tiffany added.
“April Augustus [the SPCA executive director] also said Kayson could come and see the animals whenever he liked.”
During his visit, Kayson, who has a beloved French Bulldog named Zara at home, especially enjoyed spending time with bunnies, kittens, and dogs, his personal favourites.
The SPCA posted on social media, praised Kayson for his act of kindness.
“We’re sending the biggest thank you to Kayson, who did something incredibly kind for his birthday this year,” the post read.
“Instead of asking for presents, Kayson asked his friends and family to donate to the SPCA to help animals in need.
“Your big heart and generosity have made such a difference, Kayson. The animals [and all of us] are so lucky to have a friend like you!”
