Khano Smith’s Rhode Island defeated Portland Hearts of Pine 2-1 away in the US Open Cup third round yesterday [April 15].
Clay Holstand and Frank Nodarse scored first-half goals for Rhode Island; meanwhile, Titus Washington netted in the second period for the home side.
Both teams were reduced to ten, with Karifa Yao dismissed in the 78th minute for Rhode Island and Mikey Lopez sent off in the 87th minute for Portland.
Smith, the former Bermuda captain, made history in his first year as a head coach last term, leading Rhode Island to the Eastern Conference final in their inaugural season.
