A ceremony was held at St Peter’s Church to honour Pilot James Darrell [1749-1815], Bermuda’s first King’s Pilot and the first Black Bermudian to own property,
A spokesperson said, “Descendants of Pilot James Darrell gathered at St Peter’s Church on Saturday to honour the Bermudian who was born enslaved in 1749 and freed thanks to his navigational skills and seamanship. He was Bermuda’s first King’s Pilot and the first Black Bermudian to own property, and is buried in St Peter’s Church Graveyard.
“The commemorative service was led by Rev Dr Lorne Bean and St Peter’s Church Priest-in-Charge Canon John Stow, with the tribute to Pilot James Darrell given by Darrell descendent Captain Roy Kenneth Todd.
“In attendance were the Mayor of St George Quinell Francis, area MPs Kim Swan, Lovitta Foggo and Renee Ming, and wreaths were laid by Pilot Warden Mario Thompson and Friends of St Peter’s Church Chairman Gillian Outerbridge.”
